5 Reasons why life is like a painting...

5 Reasons why life is like a painting...

"Behind the Shine"

5. There's no perspective without darkness.
Dark shades in a painting give it depth and perspective. They also make the other colours look brighter. It's the tough times that bring out the steel in us and make us aware of what's good.

4. Everyone's is unique and different.
Like two works of art can't be compared, there's no point in comparing yourself with someone. Their journey and their experiences are different from yours. Focus on yourself.

3. You have to fill in the gaps with colour.
Otherwise the painting looks incomplete and unattractive. When you feel like life is gray, boring and dull, add colour to it by doing what you love and spending time with people you love and who love you.

2. You can use an eraser. Or turn the page.
When you feel cornered, or that you made a mess of things, remember that you can try and amend your mistakes, or you can start afresh.

1. In the end, you're doing it for you.
Like paintings, life is all about doing what you love. Forget the critics. You should be able to look back at what you've done years later and be happy.

Happy Painting!

My 16 Rules For Living

My 16 Rules For Living

I promised you in this Rules for Living post that I'd give you my own Rules for Living. It took me a few months, but here they are:
  1. Never put yourself down. There are enough people to do it for you.
  2. It's alright to flip out once in a while. Just as long as the flipping out doesn't take too long and then you take action to solve the reason for flipping out.
  3. You're the best version of yourself when you're in pursuit of your dream. And you attract good things to yourself. So always, always chase your dream.
  4. If it made you happy, don't regret it.
  5. When you're independent, people want you to depend on them.
  6. Don't do for people what they can and should do for themselves.
  7. You have one body for your entire life. Take good care of it.
  8. The most successful people are the ones who apply logic in all scenarios.
  9. After applying logic, listen to your instinct. It's almost always right.
  10. Never overestimate others' intelligence. Never underestimate your own.
  11. Life is too long to hold grudges. And carrying all that anger around only tires you.
  12. Never reveal your weaknesses to anyone. Work on them secretly.
  13. You can be your own best friend by not letting others influence your judgment.
  14. Always stick with people who know they are flawed and ridiculous.
  15. Be kind and gentle, being harsh and angry gets you nowhere.
  16. Before forgiving someone else, learn to forgive yourself first.

Little Delights Tuesday

Little Delights Tuesday

  • Someone telling me I'm their lucky charm.
  • Unexpected gifts: a box of Godiva chocolates (thank you David!), gorgeous jewelry and a cute key ring.
  • Making my brother's cat go crazy with a laser. If you have never done this, you don't know what you're missing! It's hilarious!
  • Singing and acting along to songs as if someone's filming me for the music video.
  • Finding that the shoes I've been drooling over for two months have finally been marked down (from BD 29 to BD 14!) and getting them. I'll introduce you to these beautiful babies soon.
  • Finishing a Mills & Boons romance novel in two days. Don't judge me. They're excellent light reads. Pfft! Why am I justifying this?
  • Finding the perfect shampoo and conditioner. This is going to sound very advertise-y, bu it makes my hair soft, smooth, shiny and oh-so-sexy!
  • Taking a shower in really hot water and watching as the steam fills up the bathroom. Then I pretend I'm in my personal sauna.
Tell me yours! xxx

I'd rather be...

I'd rather be...

The Princess and the Lotus. Glass painting, 2001.
I'd rather be.. bad than boring.
I'd rather be... brutally honest than tell white lies.
I'd rather be... classy than trendy.
I'd rather be... real and lonely than fake and popular.
I'd rather be... flawed than perfect.
I'd rather be... healthy than thin.
I'd rather be... a listener than a talker.
I'd rather... love than judge.
I'd rather be... a Narcissist than pitied.
I'd rather be... hated for what I am than loved for what I'm not.
I'd rather... have genuine enemies than fake friends.
I'd rather be... myself than someone's clone.

Little Delights Tuesday

Little Delights Tuesday

The Dark Side of Me

Buying chick-lit by two of my favourite authors: Belinda Jones and Meg Cabot. Always hilarious, yet very deep. And sooooo much fun.

My Lexus SC 430 matchbox car. My dad gave this to me when he visited me in India during my college days. Lexus SC 430 is my dream car and it was love at first sight when I first saw it. So imagine my delight when my dad got me this sweet little miniature one in my favourite colour.

This basket I recently stole from my mom's house. I love baskets. And this one has lace and a tiny satin rose!

What are the little things that made YOU smile recently?

Little Delights Tuesday

  • Smelling a perfume and falling in love with it. And getting it for myself. Oh and it's called 'Dark Kiss'.
  • Staring at the cloud-streaked gorgeous sky.
  • Playing tag with my brother's cat.
  • Buying these amazing socks from Bath & Body Works that have shea butter inside them and anti-slip gel pads on the soles.
  • Basking in the winter sunshine.
  • The sight of my 4 year old niece sitting between two broad-shouldered tall men and totally commanding their attention.
  • Fish for lunch at my mom's place. Yummy!
  • My older brother telling me 'I'm proud of you'.
  • Reconnecting with an old friend.
  • Simply lazing around in my warm bed doing absolutely nothing.
  • Dancing around in my apartment.
  • Flirting.
This is a sketch I did in 2006. Tell me if you like it! Thanks for stopping by and let me know your Little Delights!

I'm getting better at it

I'm getting better at it

"Silenced by Myself"

Blouse and Belt: Mango, Skirt: Zara, Shoes: New Look, Earrings: Gifted.
Recently, someone close to me told me, "You really shouldn't model. You're so nervous. I can see the nervousness in your eyes." I agree. I'm one nervous sparrow when I'm posing. But at least I'm doing what I really love doing, and I'm learning to be better at it along the way. It's been almost a year since I started this blog. I think I've learnt a few things so far, to say the least. Fashion and outfit blogging is a whole new world for me and I promised myself that whether I hardly have followers, or less page views, or hate comments, or a bad camera, I'll still keep doing it. And that's what I'm doing.

On another note, I recently made this pastel artwork. I wanted to symbolize the times when you really want to say something, but you have to keep quiet.

About the outfit: I'm just feeling girlie today I guess. All flirty and feminine. Hope you have a good week!

A new drawing and Things I'm grateful for

A new drawing and Things I'm grateful for

Top: Zara, Skirt and Belt: Mango, Bracelet: H&M, Shoes: Dorothy Perkins, Watch: Swatch

"Freedom"

Last week was effing annoying. So whenever I get annoyed, I try to focus on the positive. And thus, I made a list of things I'm grateful for:

  1. My hair dryer. Don't judge me.
  2. My kitten Sekhy.
  3. BFFs.
  4. Choki Choki. Cheap chocolate paste in tiny tubes? Hell yeah I'm grateful!
  5. My family. Even though they drive me nuts.
  6. Sketching as an outlet for negative emotions.
  7. My job.
  8. Twitter. Seriously.
  9. My health.
  10. My beautiful, peaceful home.
  11. Excellent coworkers.
  12. Paulo Coelho's Manual Of The Warrior Of Light.
  13. Freedom to do what I want.
  14. My car. My gorgeous, beautiful, lovely Honda Civic. I could drive it allllll night. It's the only place my Nothing Box gets accessed-when I'm driving my beautiful car.
In other news, I started using pastel colours to sketch. Never used them before. That's my second piece of art with it, entitled "Freedom". What do you think?

Hope you had a good week!

Little Delights Tuesday

Little Delights Tuesday

Destiny

  1. A close male friend telling me I'm the strongest woman he knows.
  2. Getting a sparkly purple manicure.
  3. Bitching about someone who deserves to be bitched about.
  4. Watching my kitten hiss at my older brother. And my brother hissing back.
  5. A cathartic conversation with a friend.
  6. A really good tweetup.
  7. Fragrant, sweet, fresh, crispy caramel popcorn.
That's all. I really struggled to get these because I've had a tough week, but I'm happy to know I did have some delightful moments!

Put yours in the comment box. Think hard, you can do it!

Little Delights Tuesday and Guilty Pleasures

Little Delights Tuesday and Guilty Pleasures

It's Hump Day again. I was literally too tired to take photos, so I decided to show you a sketch instead. You like?

Here are my Little Delights for this week:
  1. A colleague telling me I have stars in my eyes.
  2. Melinda from My Year Of Hugs calling me her little delight of last week. :-)
  3. My 7 year old niece Emma's comments on each post. She lives in Canada, and I have not met her since she was born. (How grateful am I to the internet!) Go read them, they're so cute!
  4. My friend's 7 year old cousin reading out this post in class for a read-aloud project.
This week has been maddening, so I have only these many delights. But over the weekend, a couple of friends and I were sitting at Caribou Coffee, and the napkins had this question on it- List your Guilty Pleasures. We all dared each other to list them. And that made me think- What are my guilty pleasures? (the emphasis being on guilty.) After much thought, here they are:
  1. The dark chocolate fondant at Maya La Chocolaterie. Mmmmmmm...
  2. Throwing a tantrum in front of my mom. I am an expert in throwing tantrums. Being the middle child, I learnt that my tantrums have to be a cut above the rest to really get my mom's attention. And I very unashamedly still throw them. Recently I was throwing one, and my mom looked at me very seriously and asked, "Shabana, how old are you?" My immediate answer- "6. Plus 20."
  3. Reading a gossip magazine at work.
  4. Buying yet one more 5 inch platform heels.
  5. Shopping when I know I shouldn't.
  6. Spending an entire day doing nothing but lazing on the bed. I'm a Type A hyper, workaholic, rush-around person who never switches her brain off. So this is a very guilty pleasure.
  7. Reading just before bed even though it's late and I'm super tired.
Now put yours in the comments. And add your guilty pleasures too, if you dare!

Passing on the Stylish Blogger Award and 7 things about me.

Passing on the Stylish Blogger Award and 7 things about me.

Dress, Belt: Mango, Blazer: Zara, Boots: Piazza Italia, Earrings: Accessorize, Watch: Swatch

Passing this on!
Yesterday I received this Award from not one, but two of my favourite bloggers. Pascale from Scrapwedo and Anne from Poems, Stories and Humanness. I am honoured, and now according to bloggy tradition, I have to pass this Award to my favourite blogs as well as tell you 7 things about myself.

First, the Awardees. (I'm too big of a Narcissist to let you forget the 7 things about me. So those come after.)

And now, (drumroll please) the blogs I Award this Stylish Blogger Award to are:

Kat from Mama's Losin' It. She has THE most hilarious blog I have read till date. She's a mom of 3, runs a daycare and yet manages to find time to crack up the entire world with her writing. If you're too lazy to read, just looking at her photos will have you in stitches.

Terri from Terri's Little Haven. She is a 49 year old Grandma, who blogs about recipes, her adorable 3 year old grand daughter Abby (I really mean adorable, go check out the pics and read her antics, you'll agree) and many other things under the sun. But you need to check out her blog for her AMAZING photography.

The last, and I put this one last because you HAVE to check out what this amazing woman does with her blog:

Melinda Raleigh from My Year Of Hugs. Melinda (from the U.S) has started on a quest, 2 months ago, to hug as many people as she can every day and then blog about it. By doing this, she has started a movement where people read her blog and are now hugging others. The effect has also reached as far as Bahrain, influencing me to hug more people in my life (I hope they hug more people and it goes on). She is a great inspiration and just what the world needs at this time. Read her posts and you'll see how she uplifts people on a daily basis through the very basic act of hugging. Ok scratch that, read her posts just to feel her virtual hugs to you.

That's it for my Awardees. Now 7 things about me. These are all weird, whacko and wise-ass. Like me.
  1. My friend's 4 year old son insists I'm his wife. He is so obsessed that he throws a tantrum if his parents tease him about me getting married to someone else. (I know, I can't get married to someone else if I'm his wife, but you know what I mean.)
  2. I cannot light matchsticks. I'm too afraid. Recently a friend tried to get me to do it. I did it. Once. Never again. (I hope he's not reading this.)
  3. I don't like watching TV. I think it's a bloody waste of time. I'd rather read instead of watching TV.
  4. I love my solitude and am quite brazen about being independent, so much that I have gone to Venice alone, taken a Gondola ride alone, and have had couples staring at me, with one guy actually pointing me out to his wife. Very amusing. They all probably thought- Oh the poor girl, she's been dumped. But why is she so happy about it?
  5. I'm an animal magnet. Cats, dogs, horses, they all gravitate towards me. Once, a buffalo left it's herd and started walking towards me scaring the hell out of my mom who was with me. (Oh btw, Thank You Universe. Couldn't make me a man magnet, no?)
  6. I cannot sleep at night unless I have 2 blankets on top of me, with the air conditioner turned on full.
  7. I sketch. One of my favourite ones is below.

Ok, I can't finish the post without writing about what I'm wearing, so... I've been dying to try the belt over blazer look, so here it is. And how I love these boots!
