I've just started this book called Olivia Joules and the Overactive Imagination. It's by Helen Fielding, the author of Bridget Jones' Diary. It's absolutely hilarious and highly entertaining, while managing to be deep at the same time. The protagonist, Olivia Joules (d'uh) has these Rules For Living. I so agree with her! (Especially on Rule #10). Here they are:
- Never panic. Stop, breathe, think.
- No one is thinking about you. They're thinking about themselves, just like you.
- Never change haircut or colour before an important event.
- Nothing is either as good or as bad as it seems.
- Do as you would be done by, e.g. thou shalt not kill.
- It is better to buy one expensive thing that you really like than several cheap ones that you only quite like.
- Hardly anything matters: if you get upset, ask yourself, 'Does it really matter?'
- The key to success lies in how you pick yourself up from failure.
- Be honest and kind.
- Only buy clothes that make you feel like doing a small dance.
- Trust your instincts, not your overactive imagination.
- When overwhelmed by disaster, check if it's really a disaster by doing the following: a) think, 'Oh, fuck it,' b) look on the bright side and, if that doesn't work, look on the funny side. If neither of the above works then maybe it is a disaster so turn to items 1 and 5.
- Don't expect the world to be safe or life to be fair.
- Sometimes you just have to go with the flow.
- Don't regret anything. Remember there wasn't anything else that could have happened, given who you were and the state of the world at that moment. The only thing you can change is the present, so learn from the past.
- If you start regretting something and thinking. 'I should have done...' always add, 'but then I might have been run over by a lorry or blown up by a Japanese-manned torpedo.'
Aren't those great? It's given me the idea to start writing Shabana Feroze's Rules For Living. Watch this space...
Have a good week!
Hey! Nice combination. Have you though of trying different hair styles? Like curls or something?
ReplyDeleteHello Immortal!
ReplyDeleteThanks! Glad YOU liked it! I really want to try curls/ waves, but my hair is in many layers. So it won't look good. Desperately want my hair to grow so I can be more versatile with it!
Very chic! And the rules for living are hilarious and practical. Your rules for living would be as scintillating, I'm sure L:-)
ReplyDeleteI agree with the rule about not getting worked up. About anything. Because in the end, there's not a whole lot that matters that much, anyway.
Great list! Thanks for sharing, Shabana. I cant wait to read Shabana Feroze's Rules For Living. I am excited already!!!!
