How to Keep The Winter Blues Away

How to Keep The Winter Blues Away

It's winter. It's cold and gloomy. The days are shorter and the nights are long. Most days you don't feel like getting out of your warm, cozy bed. And you feel sad for no reason. Don't worry, you just have the winter blues. Here are some things you can do to make you feel all happy and fuzzy inside again.

  • Dress up! Yes I know it's cold and you have to layer up, but you can still wear your favorite clothes and accessories.
  • Wear your favorite perfume. A good fragrance uplifts the mood, and better yet, it's on you!
  • Exercise! Long walks in the crisp air are especially refreshing. Plus the endorphin rush from exercise will make you happy.
  • Socialize. It's the season of events and activities. Do something with friends or even with just one friend if you're anti-social like me.
  • Snuggle up with hot chocolate and a book.
  • Watch your favorite movies with hot home-made popcorn.
  • Light up holiday scented candles in the house.
  • Write out a long list of everything you achieved last year. No matter how small.
  • Put up fairy lights inside your house or your room. P.S. I have fairy lights inside my closet.
  • Dance. At a club or a dance class, or in the privacy of your own room. You can't feel sad if you're dancing. It's science.
  • Reorganize your space. Rearrange your desk, the furniture in your room, or just the knick-knacks on your shelves. The newness of changing things around you will make you feel good.
  • Play your favorite music.
  • Bake! Bread, cakes, cookies, biscuits. Anything that you like that fills the house with delicious, warm aromas.
  • Do something nice and unexpected for someone you love.
  • Drink herbal tea. There's just something about sipping on a hot mug of tea that makes you feel all good inside.
  • And the last one- think about spring being around the corner!

Until next time

Stay happy

xoxo

A mixed list of things to be grateful for

A mixed list of things to be grateful for

Sometimes you get so busy yearning and working for what you want {especially now at the end of the year when you feel like you haven't reached all your goals} that you forget about the amazing things you already have. So I decided to write down all the things that I am grateful for, to remind myself that even though I didn't do everything I wanted to this year, I still have so much to be thankful for. I'm sure some of them will be the same for you, too:

Health
Family
Old friends
New friends
A warm bed
Hot mugs of tea
Being able to read and write
Rain
Pinterest
Movies
Concealer and mascara
Hugs
Books
Pets
Scented candles
Warm blankets
A cozy home
Healthy, nourishing meals
Lazy Fridays
Being happily busy with work
Pretty books to write in
Support from family, friends and acquaintances
Freedom
Music
Haters who inspire you to do better
Gadgets and technology
Drawing
Cooking food
Chocolate
Anybody who makes you laugh
Anybody who inspires you
Anybody who gave you confidence
Hot water bottles. This might sound weird but for someone like me who's a fitness instructor and has a lot of muscle pain, hot water bottles are a godsend!
Nail polish
Small, happy moments
Enough clothes and shoes
Being able to travel
Life lessons learned along the way
Red lipstick
Happy memories
Soft pj's
Massages
Bad days. Because they make good days worthwhile.
Unexpected gifts
Google!

What would you add to my list? Let me know in the comments!

Until next time, stay happy and I'll see you in the new year!

23 of My Top Beauty Tips and Tricks

23 of My Top Beauty Tips and Tricks

Photo: Arif Feroze

I'm in my 30s {I'll turn 31 in 2 months} and I have to say, I love my skin. Over the years I've looked after it and in return it has been good to me. I use very little make up, usually doing up my eyes and lips and applying blush, and I believe this has helped keep my skin looking good. I don't wear foundation as I already have clear skin and I don't like the idea of covering it up. I love experimenting with different eye shadows, eye liners and lipsticks, and so should you. Play with it and see what looks good on you. I believe that you should have fun with make up. It's one of the best advantages of being a woman! I've been having fun with it for years now and below are some of my best beauty tips and tricks that I've learned through trial and error. Maybe they'll work for you, too.

Nails

1. To make sure your nails are dry after putting polish on, gently touch your little finger’s nails to each other. If they feel sticky, you still need to give them more time.
2. Don’t skip the base coat. It lets your nails breathe and protects them from going yellow.
3. Vitamin B Complex is great for strong hair and nails.

Lips

4. Wear a lipliner all over your lips before putting your lipstick on. Your lippie will last longer.
5. Use a toothbrush to exfoliate your lips. Put lip balm/ petroleum jelly on your lips, pucker, and   brush off all the dead skin for smooth, soft lips.
6. Sleep with lip balm on for soft lips in the morning.
7. After you put on a dark lipstick, put a finger in your mouth, close your lips around it and gently pull your finger out. The excess lipstick will come out on your finger instead of staining your   teeth.
8. Never press your lips together to transfer lipstick. Your bottom and top lip are not the same shape. Use the lipstick or a lip brush to fill color in.

Eyes

9. Use an under-eye cream to keep the area moisturized. The skin here is very delicate, so use your ring finger to apply product.
10. Concealer is a life saver. Almost all of us have dark circles or shadows under our eyes, applying concealer there will make you look fresher instantly. I love MAC NC 42. Follow it up with a pressed powder to keep it in place.
11. Always curl your lashes with an eyelash curler before you put mascara on. Mascaras work best when put on curled eyelashes to give you that wide-eyed look.
12. Waterproof mascara is your best friend. It keeps your lashes up for a longer time, and you don’t have to worry about getting emotional or getting caught in rain.

Face

13. Wear sunscreen. Every. Single. Damn. Day.
14. Exfoliate once or twice a week with a gentle scrub or with used coffee grounds.
15. Drink honey lemon water every morning to flush toxins out and keep skin glowing.
16. Drink a lot of water every day. Your skin needs moisture and a good water intake will help keep it looking plump and healthy.
17. Before applying blusher, smile. It will make your cheeks pop. Sweep the blusher from your cheeks to temples. Also, it’s just nice to smile at yourself.

Hair

18. Use a conditioner after shampoo. It surprises me how so many women still don’t do this.
19. If you’re using heat on your hair through straightening/ curling irons, remember to protect your hair with a heat spray before you apply heat.
20. The easiest and most effective way to get rid of dandruff it is to use baking soda on your scalp. Wet hair, rub baking soda into your scalp, rinse, and then use shampoo and conditioner as you normally would.
21. Get your hair trimmed regularly to avoid split ends.
22. Deep condition your hair at least once a week. You can use hot oil or just your hair conditioner on dry hair. Leave it on overnight. Sleep with a shower cap on to not stain your pillow.
23. Try and wash your hair twice or once a week to let the natural oils build up. You may think you’re getting rid of greasiness by shampooing your hair frequently, but it works the other way round as your scalp produces more oil as you strip away moisture with frequent washes.

If you're too busy to put on a full face of make up, I recommend using just concealer. This one product will make you look fresher instantly. Mascara and lipstick follow close behind. A concealer that matches your complexion and hides tiredness, mascara that opens up your eyes, and a lippie in a color that looks great on you will have you looking gorgeous, fresh, and feeling confident. And it takes less than 5 minutes, I promise.

What beauty tips and tricks have you learned that is invaluable to your routine? What would you add to my list? Let me know in the comments below!

What to do when you don't want to do ANYTHING

What to do when you don't want to do ANYTHING

We all have those days when we don’t want to do anything. I mean, you don’t even want to get out of bed. Working from home I face the same problem. Some days, either because I've worked out too much the day before and I'm physically exhausted, or I’m mulling over some emotional problem in my head, I just don’t feel like doing anything. Everyone has these days. Especially now, since all the festivities are over and it's cold out and you feel lethargic. Amiright?

But there are emails to be answered, phone calls to be made, work to be done. And you’ll feel lousy if you don’t do them. So here are a few things I do to get moving and motivated:

1. Do something you like, first
When you don’t feel like doing anything, start a task that you like doing. That could be anything from finishing up a fun work project or doing something that’s a hobby. This will put you in a better mood and a more positive frame of mind. And since a task is a task, finishing it will make you feel productive, and spur you on to do the next thing.

2. Create a nice atmosphere
Light a candle, use your favourite pen or stationery, play some music. Anything that puts you in a better mood and makes you want to sit at your desk and work.

3. Get something to eat or drink that you like
Now I’m not saying wolf down a bag of chips, I’m saying get a cup of coffee, or your favorite tea in your favorite mug. Or a few pieces of chocolate. The food/ drink will give you energy and make you feel like working.

4. Start slow
When you really don’t feel like working, start slow. For example, if I have to write an article, I’ll start it, but not rush to finish it. I give myself the freedom to work on the task at hand in my own time and at my own pace. Obviously, if you have a boss bearing down on your neck to finish something urgently, this may not be possible, but maybe you can explain to him/ her that you need a little more time to finish the task so as to be able to show good quality work.

5.  Get away from facebook
Facebook and Instagram can be so tempting when you don’t feel like doing anything. Give yourself 5 or 10 minutes to check your social media and then close the windows and put your phone notifications on silent so you’re not tempted to be distracted.

6. Take the day off
And when you really, really, REALLY don’t feel like doing anything, take a personal day. Promise yourself that you’ll work twice as hard the next day.

7.  Don’t push yourself
The worst thing you can do when you’re feeling demotivated is to push yourself too much. You’ll only end up doing bad work and get into a worse mood than you’re in. Be gentle and loving with yourself, and know that everyone has days like these.

23 Things You Can Do For Free To Cheer You Up

23 Things You Can Do For Free To Cheer You Up

"I'm feeling blue."
"Let's go shopping."

We've become so used to spending money whenever we want to cheer ourselves up, but did you know there are plenty of things you can do to make yourself happy again, without spending a single penny?

Here are 23 things that I think would cheer you up, and they don't cost anything:
  1. Change bed sheets. Freshly washed bed sheets smell lovely and the change will instantly uplift your mood.
  2. Rearrange the furniture in your room. Move the table to another corner, push the bed onto another wall. If your room is too small to do this, make a few changes like rearranging the items on your shelves. Making these small changes will cheer you up and get blocked creativity to flow again.
  3. Do an elaborate hair-do, even if you're home in your pj's. Look up a nice hairstyle online that can be done without too much fuss and hair products, and then set your hair that way. It might be a ponytail, an elaborate bun or even a simple side-braid. Do something you've never done before. Walk around the house like that and you'll smile at yourself every time you look in the mirror.
  4. Play board games. Get a family member or friend and play board games with them. It's the cheapest, easiest way to have fun and pass the time.
  5. Make yourself a cup of tea. If you're alone, make yourself a nice cup of your favourite tea, in the prettiest mug you have. Sit down, sip slowww.
  6. Go for a long drive. Get in your car and go for a long drive around town. Go on roads you've never been on before.
  7. Dance. Put on your favourite music and shake that booty.
  8. Go see a baby. Have a cute niece/ nephew? Or a friend's toddler? Ask them to bring them over or go visit. Or offer to take the baby out. A cute, happy baby is always a pick-me-up {pun intended}.
  9. Bake. Bake a cake. Or cookies. And don't share.
  10. Pot a plant. Take a few seeds and pot them. If you don't have a pot, take cotton, line it at the bottom of a plastic container, and sprinkle a few seeds. Keep near sunlight.
  11. Draw. It doesn't matter if you're not a good artist. Grab some paper and pencils and draw. Let your emotions flow on paper.
  12. Call a friend. If you can't call, text. If you can't text, mail.
  13. Write a love letter to yourself. Write a long letter to yourself telling you how much you love you and why. After you're done, wrap with a pretty ribbon, spray some perfume and keep it in a special place in your closet. The next time you're down take it out and read.
  14. Watch a feel-good movie. Find an old DVD or if you're like me, you have movies saved on your laptop. Make sure it has a happy ending and you have chocolate.
  15. Clean out your closet. You never know what you might find.
  16. Sing. Pick an uplifting song and sing along to it. Loudly. One of my favourites is this one.
  17. Exercise. Instead of always feeling guilty that you haven't exercised, if you have fifteen minutes, roll out your yoga mat. Exercise releases endorphins in your system, making you feel better about yourself.
  18. Cook a delicious meal with your friends or family. It does not have to be a six course affair. Anything simple will do.
  19. Wear that new outfit you were saving up for an occasion. You waking up every day is enough occasion to celebrate.
  20. Compliment someone who you really admire or whose outfit/ jewellery/ bag you adore. It will make you happy when you see their smile.
  21. Plan your next vacation.
  22. Nosh on your favourite comfort food (but don't binge!).
  23. Dress up in your favourite colour- if it's head to toe pink, do it!
So there you have it. 23 things you can do to cheer you up, for free! What more can YOU add to the list? Leave a comment below! xxx

9 Reasons Why Winter Sucks

9 Reasons Why Winter Sucks

9 Reasons Why Winter Sucks

1.      You feel so lazy you don’t want to exercise. I hate this feeling. I’m an exercise addict and I feel abnormal when I don’t even feel like working out.
2.      It’s so cold you don’t want to get out of bed. You can’t get any work done, because all you want to do is sleep. Tell me, is that normal? I don’t think so. Waking up in the morning in winter is a PAIN. Who wants to leave their lovely, warm bed? Not me. All organizations should be shut for the winter. Or change their working hours to start in the afternoon.
3.      Winter Blues. Lack of the sun makes you feel depressed. Does anyone like feeling depressed for no good reason? Do they? Huh? HUH?!
4.      You eat more. Because it’s cold, your body wants more fuel to keep itself warm. What happens then? YOU PUT ON WEIGHT.
5.      You have to wear your entire wardrobe. A scarf on top of a coat on top of a sweater on top of a shirt on top of a vest. Try sashaying sexily like a lady when you've got all THAT on.
6.      You wanna pee all the time because it’s cold but it’s a chore because you've got so many clothes on. And cold toilet seats. What a delight!
7.      I can’t wear shorts. :=(
8.      Your skin becomes dry and flaky. You have to invest millions in skincare just to keep it moisturized. I may have exaggerated a bit there.
9.      Showers become a chore. First you have to adjust the hot water to the perfect temperature. Then take the shower. Turn the water off and the cold air hits you. Wear your robe/ wrap your towel around and go with teeth chattering all the way into your room. Slather on an entire bottle of lotion, still shivering because the lotion’s also cold. Wear warm clothes. Breathe a sigh of relief. See how evil winter is? It makes a simple and pleasant routine like a shower dreadful.

So there you go. My reasons for hating winter. Do you agree or disagree?

Top four favourite chick-lits

Top four favourite chick-lits

I love a good chick-lit. My favourite are the ones that have a strong, career-oriented female protagonist who happens to find love on the side while chasing her dreams. I devour many, many of these on a regular basis. Belinda Jones, Jane Costello, Sophie Kinsella and Meg Cabot are some of my favourite authors.

Out of all the thousands of chick-lits I've read over the years, these are four that have left an imprint on my mind.

A Valentine's Kiss by Lucie Hart
This Valentine's day Imogen is going to meet the man of her dreams, if only she can discover who he is.  At a gloriously over-the-top house party in the balmy South of France, trainee chef Imogen finds herself playing blind man's buff with a host of impossibly handsome men, when one of them kisses her. It's the most perfect kiss she's ever experienced in her short—and frankly, to date romantically disappointing—life. But by the time she recovers her wits sufficiently to remove her blindfold, her mystery kisser has disappeared. Could her Prince Charming be one of her fellow-chefs, Dimitri or Bastien? Both are clearly interested in her. But there are also enigmatic Latino hunk Enzo, good-times-guy DJ Cheyenne, aristocratic Amaury, and the American visitors—Archer and Everett. So many men, so little time. Imogen can't just keep kissing men until she finds the right one—can she?

I love this book not only because of the unique plot, but because the author references real paintings and photos in the story. I was constantly googling them while reading this book. Plus, the mystery is maintained until the end. The author will have you guessing until the end and finally when the mystery man is revealed it's a real {but pleasant} surprise. Oh and of course- the book is set in South of France, which just makes it so much more interesting.

What's your Number by Karyn Bosnak
How many men does it take to find true love?
When Delilah Darling reads a survey revealing that most people have 10.5 sexual partners in their lifetime, she begins to feel like a tramp. She’s slept with nineteen men so far—–almost twice the national average. During a self-help moment, she vows to cap her “number” at twenty, swearing she’ll save her last spot for the right guy. But after losing her job and having a wild night on the town, she falls into bed with Mr. Wrong. Unwilling to up her number, but also unable to imagine a life of celibacy, Delilah does the only thing a girl in her situation can do: she tracks down every man she’s ever slept with in a last-ditch effort to make it work with one of them.
A hilarious romp through Delilah’s past loves, What’s Your Number? shines a spotlight on every woman’s dirty little secret and proves that, when it comes to matters of the heart, sometimes numbers tell only a fraction of the story.

Trust me, if you've watched the movie first and liked it even a little bit, read the book. It's very different from the movie but runs along the same lines. This is one of those books that seems very light, but manages to teach you quite a bit. Funny but very intriguing, it'll have you hooked from start to end.

All I Ever Wanted by Kristin Higgins
One Happily-Ever-After Rocking Chair...
and no sign of any forthcoming babies to rock in ol' Georgebury, Vermont. For Callie Grey, turning thirty means coming to grips with the fact that her boss (and five-week fling) is way overdue in his marriage proposal. And way off track because Mark has suddenly announced his engagement to the company's new Miss Perfect. If that isn't bad enough, her mom decides to throw her a three-oh birthday bash in the family funeral home.
Bad goes to worse when she stirs up a crazy relationship with the town's not so warm and fuzzy veterinarian, Ian McFarland, in order to flag Mark's attention. So Ian is more comfortable with animals.... So he's formal, orderly and just a bit tense. The ever-friendly, fun-loving and spontaneous Callie decides it's time for Ian to get a personality makeover. But dang, if he doesn't shock the heck out of her, she might actually fall for Vermont's unlikeliest eligible bachelor....

The most outstanding thing about this book is that the author manages to really make you feel the emotions the protagonist Callie Grey is going through.  P.S: She'll make you cry. But don't worry, it's still got a happy ending. This book left me with a warm, fuzzy feeling that stayed with me for days after I finished it.

Diamonds Are A Girl's Best Friend by Jenny Colgan
What does an It girl do if she loses all her money?
Sophie Chesterton is a girl about town – she knows all the right people, goes to all the right parties, and wears all the right clothes. But deep down she suspects that her best friends are actually rather nasty, and that her lifestyle doesn't really amount to much. Her father wants her to make her own way in the world. to make him proud. But after one shocking evening her life is changed for ever.
Scraping a living as an assistant to a ‘glamour’ photographer; living in a hovel on the Old Kent Road with four smelly boys; eating baked beans from the can – this is one spectacular fall from grace. Sophie is desperate to get her life back – but does a girl really need diamonds to be happy?

Again, a book which has a unique story. It's heartwarming and inspiring to see how Sophie adjusts to being penniless after living in the lap of luxury. Not only is this book hilarious, it manages to leave you with food for thought while also having a surprise ending.

Except for What's Your Number, I picked up all these books by chance, absolutely oblivious to how they'd become my favourite pieces of fluff fiction. So really, don't judge a book by it's cover.
Happy reading!

My top nine rom-coms

My top nine rom-coms

Rom-coms. Romantic comedies that never fail to make you feel good. I love them.
But they have to be funny. I hate mushy intense romantic movies. Bleurgh.
And of course, they have to have a hunky-dunky male lead otherwise what's the point?

Here's a list of the top nine rom-coms {in no specific order} that I love to watch over and over again:

1. Leap Year

My cousin Rubina introduced me to this movie and ohmigod I'm so glad she did!
Anna {Amy Adams} has a perfect life with a steady boyfriend. She expects him to propose one night and when he doesn't, decides to follow him to Dublin, Ireland, to propose to him, as she's heard of an Irish tradition where on Feb 29th a lady can propose to her man and he has to accept. But on the way she gets stuck in a small town called Dingle in Ireland where she meets our hero, a surly but gorgeous innkeeper called Declan O'Callaghan. He agrees to drop her to Dublin for a fee.

This has got to be one of the funniest rom-coms I've watched. Declan's 'diddly-eye's, him referring to Anna's precious Louis Vuitton bag as 'Louie', Anna's stupid antics and the funny side characters will have you in stitches.

Declan: [slams Anna's suitcase on the ground] How does that work?
Anna: Can you be careful with that, it was a gift from my boyfriend!
Declan: He bought you a suitcase?
Anna: It's a Vuitton.
Declan: What?
Anna: A Louis Vuitton?
Declan: Come on. Ah, is it yourself Louie? Can I give you a hand getting into the car Louie? She named her suitcase, she's a crackpot.

2. The Wedding Date
Dermot Mulroney. My absolute favourite rom-com actor.
Here he stars alongside Debra Messing as a... wait for it... male escort. Kat has to attend her sister's wedding and her ex-fiancé's going to be there. Out of desperation she decides to hire a male escort- Nick Mercer- as her 'wedding date' to make her ex jealous and shut all of her nagging relatives up.

This movie is filled with beautiful music, gorgeous scenes of the English countryside and some really nice lines on love. I guarantee it will leave you smiling like an idiot when it's over.

Nick: Close your eyes. Close your eyes. Close... your... eyes. You're safe. You can relax. I'm not going to kiss you. He's gonna be so sorry he lost you, so stop worrying. Forget the past. Forget the pain. And remember what an incredible woman you are. You do that and he'll realize what he lost.
Kat: Holy crap. You're worth every penny.

3. 10 Things I Hate About You

Based on Shakespeare's Taming of The Shrew, this is a high school movie with a twist. Kat and Bianca are two sisters and their protective dad won't let pretty Bianca {the younger sister} date unless tough individualistic Kat does. So Patrick {Heath Ledger} is being paid by Cameron {a very young and cute Joseph Gordon-Levitt} to date Kat {Julia Stiles} so that he can date Bianca. Patrick's cheek and Kat's toughness make them the perfect pair, but she just won't admit it.

This is a very light movie and will have you laughing over all the typical American high school antics, or the way Kat keeps dissing Patrick.

Patrick: Well maybe you're not afraid of me but I'm sure you've thought about me naked, huh?
Kat: [sarcastically] Am I that transparent? I want you, I *need* you, oh baby, oh baby.

4. Bridget Jones's Diary

Bridget {Renee Zellweger} can't control her weight, can't stop smoking, is still single, and isn't getting anywhere with her job. So on New Year's she decides to keep a diary in a bid to get her life under control.  That's not much help since she keeps chasing the wrong guy {Hugh Grant} while Mr. Darcy {Colin Firth} isn't given a chance. Watch this one purely for Renee Zellweger's brilliant comedic timing.

Bridget: Here is the man we like to call Mr., uh,
[to herself]: Titspervert. Titspervert.
[to audience]
Fitzherbert. Because... that is his name.

5. Chocolat

WARNING: DO NOT WATCH THIS MOVIE WITHOUT COPIOUS AMOUNTS OF CHOCOLATE AT HAND.

Vianne Rocher {Juliette Binoche} and her 6 year old daughter move to a small town in rural France and open a chocolaterie. The rigidly moral town folk are opposed to her and her 'sinful' chocolates but soon learn to accept her.

This movie has chocolate being made, decorated, eaten or displayed in almost every scene. And on top of that, it has a gypsy Johnny Depp. Be prepared to die from yearning.

Luc Clairmont: [at confession] Each time I tell myself it's the last time, but then I get a whiff of her hot chocolate, or...
Madame Audel: ...Seashells. Chocolate seashells, so small, so plain, so *innocent*. I thought, oh, just one little taste, it can't do any harm. But it turned out they were filled with rich, sinful...
Yvette Marceau: ...And it *melts*, God forgive me, it melts ever so slowly on your tongue, and tortures you with pleasure.

6. Bride Wars

Liv {Kate Hudson} and Emma {Anne Hathaway} have been best friends since childhood. Both have dreamed of getting married at the Plaza in June, with the famous Marion St. Claire as their wedding planner. Their boyfriends propose on the same day and so they visit Marion to plan their weddings and book dates for the Plaza. However, due to Marion's secretary's mistake, their weddings are scheduled for the same day. None of them are willing to choose another venue. Best friends become enemies as they try to sabotage each others' wedding.

This movie doesn't focus on romance but on friendship, especially the close bond a woman shares with a best friend. Liv and Emma's antics to sabotage each other are funny but most of all it's heartwarming to watch how strong their friendship is.

Marion St.Claire: It was quite a wedding and as I stood there watching I realized something I'd forgotten a long time ago. Sometimes in life there really are bonds formed that can never be broken. Sometimes you really can find that one person who will stand by you no matter what. Maybe you will find it in a spouse and celebrate it with your dream wedding. But there's also the chance that the one person you can count on for a lifetime, the one person who knows you sometimes better than you know yourself is the same person who's been standing beside you all along.

7. Kate & Leopold

Dear Hugh Jackman, I think I speak collectively for womankind when I say this: WHY THE HELL DON'T YOU STAR IN MORE ROM-COMS?

Ok, now that I got that out of the way...
Kate {Meg Ryan} lives in New York in the present day. Leopold {Hugh Jackman} is a Duke living in 1876. Due to a time gap he makes it through to modern New York and meets Kate. He falls in love with her. But she lives in the now. He, quite literally, lives in the past. Can love transcend time?

There could not have been a more perfect pick to play Leopold than Hugh Jackman. He's the epitome of chivalry and gentlemanliness straight from the 19th century. Watching this movie will have you wondering why the heck weren't you born in the 19th century.

Leopold: That thing is a damned hazard!
Kate: It's just a toaster!
Leopold: Well, insertion of bread into that so-called toaster produces no toast at all, merely warm bread! Inserting the bread twice produces charcoal. So, clearly, to make proper toast it requires one and a half insertions, which is something for which the apparatus doesn't begin to allow! One assumes that when the General of Electric built it, he might have tried using it. One assumes the General might take pride in his creations instead of just foisting them on an unsuspecting public.
Kate: You know something? Nobody gives a rat's ass that you have to push the toast down twice. You know why? Because everybody pushes their toast down twice!
Leopold: Not where I come from.
Kate: Oh, right. Where you come from, toast is the result of reflection and study!
Leopold: Ah yes, you mock me. But perhaps one day when you've awoken from a pleasant slumber to the scent of a warm brioche smothered in marmalade and fresh creamery butter, you'll understand that life is not solely composed of tasks, but tastes.

8. Only You

My colleague had recommended I watch this movie before I went on holiday by myself to Italy, since this movie is filmed there. I am so, so thankful to him or I wouldn't have known about this over-the-top cute flick or ever seen Robert Downey Jr. and Marisa Tomei this young and gorgeous.

Faith {Marisa Tomei} is a big believer in destiny. When she is 11, an Ouija board tells her the name of her soulmate is Damon Bradley. 14 years later, she's just gotten engaged to her boyfriend, a boring podiatrist, who's name is NOT Damon Bradley. But Faith still is a big believer in destiny and when one of her fiancé's friend's calls to congratulate him, and tells her his name is Damon Bradley, she knows she has to meet him. Unfortunately, he's on his way to Venice. She rushes to the airport with her sister-in-law to pursue him.

This has got to be the cutest rom-com of them all and by far my most watched. RDJ is compelling and adorable, Marisa Tomei in that white dress is breathtaking, plus you get to see the beauty of Italy as they move from one city to another.

Faith: How could you do this to me?
Peter: Because I'm in love with you!
Faith: Ha! What kind of an excuse is that?

9. The Holiday

Amanda {Cameron Diaz} lives in glamorous Los Angeles, USA. Iris {Kate Winslet} lives in a cottage in Surrey, England. Both are fed up with their love lives. Both need to take a break and decide to house-swap for the Christmas holidays. Both find love while holidaying, in the form of Miles {Jack Black} and Graham {Jude Law}, who is also Iris' brother. They learn a lot about themselves, and love, in the process.

Beautiful scenes, amazing dialogues and Arthur Abbott's lessons on 'gumption' make this a feel-good movie through-and-through.

Iris: I understand feeling as small and as insignificant as humanly possible. And how it can actually ache in places you didn't know you had inside you. And it doesn't matter how many new haircuts you get, or gyms you join, or how many glasses of chardonnay you drink with your girlfriends... you still go to bed every night going over every detail and wonder what you did wrong or how you could have misunderstood. And how in the hell for that brief moment you could think that you were that happy. And sometimes you can even convince yourself that he'll see the light and show up at your door. And after all that, however long all that may be, you'll go somewhere new. And you'll meet people who make you feel worthwhile again. And little pieces of your soul will finally come back. And all that fuzzy stuff, those years of your life that you wasted, that will eventually begin to fade.

If you're wondering why this is a list of nine and not ten movies, it's just because this is a list of flicks I absolutely lurrrve and don't want to include one more just to make it a round number.
Happy watching! xxx
