Concealers And Powders I'm Currently In Love With And How I Use Them

Concealers And Powders I'm Currently In Love With And How I Use Them

If there's one thing I'm obsessed with in my makeup routine, it's concealer. Like most brown girls, I have shadows under my eyes. It's compounded by the fact that my facial bone structure makes my eyes sink in, adding to the shadowy look under my eyes. While I can't change my face's bone structure {and I don't want to get fillers under my eyes}, the best I can do is use concealer.
I love that I can put on concealer any time and it instantly changes my appearance. It makes me look fresher. My under eye shadows always make me look tired. Concealer changes that and makes me look awake and fresh. Which is why I almost never step out of the house without concealer. And in a bid to find the best one, I have tried thousands over the years. Okay, not thousands, but several.
One of my friends asked me to write a post on my favourite concealers, so here we are. Currently, I have a lot of concealers. And honestly, I think it's okay to have a few because again as a brown girl, your skin colour changes from time to time. I go to Thailand and boom! My skin is a few shades darker. Forget Thailand. The Bahrain summer months of July and August never fail to give my face a tan. This is despite religious use of sunscreen.
So it makes sense that I have a few different concealers in different shades. Not just that, but of different consistency and coverage. I have some concealers that are very thick and provide full coverage. I have some that are thinner and are great for when my under eye area feels particularly dry. I have some that I put on when I'm in a rush. Sometimes my shadows are really dark and I just layer on ALL the concealers in a bid to cover up the purple-y grey crescents under my eyes.
Note: this does not work. But does that stop me from doing it? Nooooo.
So enough of my babbling, here are the concealers I'm currently using and in love with:
The Concealers

MAC Cosmetics Pro Conceal And Correct Palette in Medium Deep is my number one favourite concealer palette right now. I can't live without it. I was introduced to it last year when I went to a MAC store in Bahrain. One of the makeup artists, Abeer, showed me how to use this palette and I loved it! What I love the most about this palette is that it has 2 correctors and 4 shades. This makes it very travel-friendly and lets me customize my concealer needs whenever my skin tone changes.
Before this palette, I used to have a separate corrector and many concealers in different shades. Now I don't need to. Everything is in one palette and that's so practical. I had taken this with me when I went on holiday to Thailand and it was the best thing ever! When I got tanned, I simply used the darkest shade in the palette and it was perfect! Such a relief!
The consistency of these concealers is very thick, offering full coverage. A little goes a long way. I hadn't realized that the corrector I needed wasn't orange, it's yellow! The yellow corrector in this palette is perfect to take away the greyness under my eyes. I also realized that if you mix the yellow and orange correctors, you can get any shade of concealer you need.
My MAC concealer shade is NC 42, and this concealer has NC 42 as well as NC 40. I also found it very reasonable at BD 15 for the entire palette since you get 6 shades. And hey, after all, it's MAC.

L.A Girl Pro Conceal HD Concealer in GC 976 Pure Beige is an evergreen {everbeige?} favourite. I don't think I can ever stop buying this. It's a creamy formula and this shade always suits my skin. Because the formula is creamy and light, I use it to cover the darkness around my mouth. It blends really easily into my skin and feels light. Sometimes if I feel the MAC concealer feels too heavy and matte under my eyes, I add a little bit of this concealer on top to make my skin look more dewy and natural.

I love the Maybelline Instant Age Rewind Eraser Dark circles Concealer + Treatment because of its texture. It's super hydrating and has good coverage. The consistency is thinner than the LA Girl concealer, but because it's really moisturizing, like the LA Girl concealer, sometimes I put it as the last thing before I set my concealer with powder. The sponge applicator feels great on the skin and it makes the application really easy. I really like that it has goji berry in it.

The Application
I’ve tried a lot of concealer brushes and I have come to this conclusion- my fingers are the best tools. The warmth from my fingers melts the product and makes it easier to apply. It's also really easy for me to get into the tricky corners of my eyes using my fingers. For the Maybelline and LA Girl concealers, I put it on my skin directly then spread or pat it in with my fingers.

The Powders
I like to set my concealers with powder. I wish I could leave this step out because I really like the dewy look of just concealer, but living in a terribly humid country like Bahrain means that your concealer will slip off if you don't set it with powder.
Here are the ones I love the best and am currently using:

MAC Cosmetics Studio Fix Perfecting Powder, BD 15

The MAC Studio Fix Perfecting Powder in Medium Dark was a game-changer for me. Because finally, FINALLY, I found a powder that actually matched my exact skin tone! Before this, I was always recommended powders that were too light for me. Because this powder matches my skin colour so well, even if my concealer isn't the perfect match, a little bit of this powder makes everything look seamless. This is a fine powder that sets concealer beautifully. It doesn't cake and looks very natural on the skin. I like to apply this powder with a wedge-shaped sponge because the thin part of the sponge gets into my sunken under eye area perfectly. A beauty blender never does.
The Australis Ready Set Go Finishing Powder in True Translucent is one of my favourite finishing powders. I've tried a lot of finishing powders but I really like this one because 1. it's really translucent, 2. it's super, super fine, and 3. it feels very light on the skin. It doesn't feel like you're wearing any powder on your skin at all. This powder is usually the last step in my makeup routine. I don't wear foundation, only concealer, so I need powder to set the concealer and also mattify my oily face. Under the eyes I use the MAC Studio Fix Perfecting Powder, then I use a big fluffy brush to pick up very little of the Australis Finishing Powder and do a quick sweep of it all over my face.
And that's it! Those are all my favourite concealers and the powders with which I set them. I don't like the result of foundation which can look heavy and cakey, plus I believe in letting the skin breathe. Also, Bahrain with its super humid climate is not really the best place to put too much makeup on your face. Especially foundation. So I just use concealers and powders in places that need concealing.

To end this post I'll say this- it's OKAY to be flawed. It's OKAY to have acne and rosacea and freckles and blemishes. Love the skin you're in. Don't obsess so much about covering it up or about looking a certain way. Don't think that you need to match a certain beauty standard. If you're a positive, kind person, you'll always look beautiful. Wear makeup for yourself, to look fresher and the way YOU want to look. Because it helps you feel better about yourself. And again, don't go crazy trying to completely cover those undereye circles or hyperpigmentation. It's alright if it shows. There are better things in life to obsess about than covering up your perceived flaws.
Until next time,
Feel beautiful.

How To Do My Everyday Makeup- A Step-by-step Guide

How To Do My Everyday Makeup- A Step-by-step Guide

Many of you have asked me how I'm doing my makeup, especially my eyeliner. So I thought I'd do a full makeup tutorial showing the products I'm using, with a step-by-step guide to how I do my make up. Before I begin, let me start by saying that I like to keep my makeup as simple as possible. I'm not into heavy eyebrows or lots of blended eye shadow. And I like my beauty sleep! Which is why you're seeing very few products in the picture above. I like my makeup routine to take the least amount of time possible but result in a look that's defined, without looking over the top.

Also, I don't wear foundation. I have good skin, and I like to let it show. I find foundation too heavy for my oily skin. I hate the way it makes you look older and defines your lines and wrinkles. Plus, in Bahrain's heat and humidity, it just feels too heavy on the skin. This is just my personal opinion. If you like foundation, go ahead and wear it. Just add it to this makeup routine.

The products in the image above are placed in the order of use, from left to right.

Let's begin.

A step-by-step guide to my basic/ everyday makeup

Step 1: Primer
After I've moisturized and put on sunscreen on my face {if you want to know which sunscreen I use and why it's essential for every day, read this post}, I start my makeup routine by applying Clarins Instant Smooth Perfecting Touch as a primer. I apply it underneath my eyes, in the corners, to the area next to my nose that has open pores, as well as on my nose. I love how it smoothens the skin and makes it ready for concealer.

Step 2: Corrector
After the primer, I apply an orange corrector underneath my eyes. I have dark shadows underneath my eyes, as well as some darkness in the inner corners. Before I put on concealer, the orange corrector helps to even out the darkness and take away the purpleness of the shadows. I use L.A Girl Pro Conceal Corrector in orange.

The trick here is to use very, very little. Or you'll end up with orange eyes. After getting it wrong many, many times, I have learned to use just a dot under my eyes. I put on a dot under my eyes directly from the corrector tube. I spread this all over the dark undereye area using a soft concealer brush. You can use your fingers as well. Just make sure you don't spread it out on your normal skin. Keep it within the area that's dark because that's where the corrector is needed. You know you've spread and blended it correctly when your undereyes look as if they're the same colour as the rest of your face, not orange.

Step 3: Concealer + Powder
After the corrector, I put on concealer over the corrector. I use L.A Girl Pro Concealer in Pure Beige. Using the tube directly, I apply it in downward strokes, making a triangle under my eye, next to the nose. I blend it out using a concealer brush. It's not important whether you use dots or strokes or whatever shape to put concealer on, just make sure you don't keep it only within the area of your undereye. Extend it downwards to the top of your cheek area next to your nose, so it looks well-blended.

I also apply concealer to my eyelids {whatever's left on the brush after I've applied it under my eye as I don't want too much on my eyelid} and to the inside corners of my eyes. Then I apply it to the bulb of my nose where I have open pores and blackheads, and I blend it in using round strokes with the brush, so it really settles in. I use a damp beauty blender to press the concealer in even more. All over my eyelid, under my eyes, the top of my cheeks, and my nose.

I set the concealer by applying two setting powders. On the eye area, I apply Australis Banana Powder. This product is a recent discovery after Mask Line sent it to me. I fell in love with it and it has become a part of my daily makeup routine. The yellowness of the powder really hides and offsets the darkness under my eyes. It lasts the entire day. I've received a lot of compliments since I've started wearing it! On my forehead and chin, I use Ben Nye Neutral Set Colorless Powder as the Banana Powder makes my face look unnaturally white if I apply it on my forehead and chin.

Watch this video to see the concealer technique I use.

Step 4: Eyeliner
My favourite eyeliner at the moment is Schwing, by the Balm cosmetics. It has a fine felt tip, making it easy to apply a defined line. It stays put the entire day, even on my oily skin.

Many of you have asked me how I do my eyeliner. I have round, downturned eyes, so I do my best to turn them up at the ends and to make them look less round. After watching and practising from many, many YouTube makeup videos and makeup posts for round eyes, I settled on this eyeliner technique. This feline flick makes my eyes look lifted up and cat-like. The best part about this eyeliner is that it can be customized. You can adjust the angle, thickness and the length of the liner to suit you and your unique eye shape.

Here's how to do my sexy feline flick:

1. From the centre of your top lash line, draw a straight, almost horizontal, line out to the outer corner of your eye. The line can be angled up high if you want a more dramatic cat-like flick. You can choose to extend it out as far as you want but don't extend it outside your eyebrow. Remember that the higher you lift the line, the thicker your liner will eventually be.

2. Join the end of the line back to the point at the end of your lashline, creating a triangle. Fill this triangle in with your liner.

3. You can now adjust the liner by extending it on the inside to join your lash line, so it looks softer. You can also extend the point of the flick to look more pronounced, or you can lift it up higher for more drama.

And that's it! It's as easy as 1, 2, 3! It does take some time to get it right, so practice, practice, practice! If you have round eyes like mine, don't take the liner all the way into the inner corner or make it thick on the highest arch. Otherwise, the roundness of your eye will look even rounder. The triangular flick at the end is what makes a round eye look cat-like. If you have almond-shaped eyes, you can line your eyes all the way in.

Step 5: Mascara
Once your liner dries {and this liner dries very quickly}, curl your eyelashes using an eyelash curler. I like to lift the curler up and count to 30 to get a good curl. After my lashes are curled, I apply a thin coat of Flormar Ultimate Eyes Primer Mascara along three-quarters of the top of my lashes. This white mascara is a primer that makes my lashes look thicker for when I apply black mascara. Once this is dry, I apply Maybelline Volum' Express The Colossal Waterproof Mascara on top of it. Apply this all the way from the base of the lashes to the top, making sure you cover all the white.

I like to apply several coats. To be honest, I'm not very happy with this mascara. I'm not finding the length and volume I used to. I'm itching to try one of L'Oreal's carbon fibre mascaras. Maybe I'll still use this mascara as the base and apply the carbon fibre mascara on top, as the waterproof-ness holds the lashes up.

Step 6: Eyebrows
I usually do my eyebrows when the mascara is drying. I love the Elf Eyebrow Kit. I use the light brown shade in it and lightly fill in my eyebrows using an angled brush. I already have naturally thick and dark brows and I don't like making them bigger and darker. Which is why this kit and the shades in it are great for a more natural looking brow where I can just fill in my eyebrows with a bit of colour. Once filled in, I apply a brow mascara to keep the hair in place.

Step 7: Highlighting the Eyes
This step can also be done when waiting for the mascara to dry. I take a bright goldish-beige eye shadow and put this in the inner corners of my eyes. This makes my eyes look wide awake and the whole face look brighter.

The last step for my eye makeup- I put a nude beige liner in the lower waterline of my eyes, to make the eyes look more open. I like NYX Wonder Pencil in Medium

And that's it! My eye makeup is done!

Here's the step-by-step guide in pictures for you to pin on Pinterest.

Step 8: Lippie
Once my eye makeup is done, I apply whatever lipstick that suits my fancy Usually, when I wear lipstick I apply lip liner all over my lips so the lipstick stays in place. If I'm wearing a long-stay matte lip colour, I skip the lip liner.

Step 9: Blush
I always apply blush after my lipstick because then I know what colour blush I have to apply. I always choose a shade of blush that's different from my lippie. So if I'm wearing pink lippie, I wear a rosy brownish blush, if I'm wearing maroon lipstick, I put on a pink blush. I do this just so my face doesn't look like it has the same colour all over. I apply it with a soft blush brush, in an upward swooping motion from my cheekbone to my temple.

I haven't taken any pictures of lipsticks and blush. I have so many and depending on what I'm wearing and how I'm feeling that day, I choose the colour for my lips and cheeks. Plus they come in so many different types. I have lipsticks, lip pencils, chubby lip pencils, matte lipsticks, matte liquid lip colours and lip glosses. The same goes for blush. There's powder blushes, cream blushes, cheek stains, ad nauseam. Sometimes I use a bronzer as a blush. Sometimes I mix two colours. So experiment and have fun!

That's it! My makeup is done! This makeup takes about 20- 30 minutes to do. If I remember, I spray my face with a setting spray.

The products listed above are just the ones that I like and choose to use. Feel free to substitute them with whatever brand of product that you like.

A few more tips

During the day when my face gets oily, I use oil wipes to absorb the oil and keep me looking fresh. I also carry a small spray bottle of rose water to spray on my face when my face feels icky and dry. Because my skin tends to flake a bit, even though it's oily, I carry moisturizer with me everywhere. It's in my car, it's in my handbag, it's in my gym bag, it's everywhere!

I hope you found this makeup tutorial helpful. If you have any more questions, or if you want me to do a skincare tutorial, let me know in the comments below!

23 of My Top Beauty Tips and Tricks

23 of My Top Beauty Tips and Tricks

Photo: Arif Feroze

I'm in my 30s {I'll turn 31 in 2 months} and I have to say, I love my skin. Over the years I've looked after it and in return it has been good to me. I use very little make up, usually doing up my eyes and lips and applying blush, and I believe this has helped keep my skin looking good. I don't wear foundation as I already have clear skin and I don't like the idea of covering it up. I love experimenting with different eye shadows, eye liners and lipsticks, and so should you. Play with it and see what looks good on you. I believe that you should have fun with make up. It's one of the best advantages of being a woman! I've been having fun with it for years now and below are some of my best beauty tips and tricks that I've learned through trial and error. Maybe they'll work for you, too.

Nails

1. To make sure your nails are dry after putting polish on, gently touch your little finger’s nails to each other. If they feel sticky, you still need to give them more time.
2. Don’t skip the base coat. It lets your nails breathe and protects them from going yellow.
3. Vitamin B Complex is great for strong hair and nails.

Lips

4. Wear a lipliner all over your lips before putting your lipstick on. Your lippie will last longer.
5. Use a toothbrush to exfoliate your lips. Put lip balm/ petroleum jelly on your lips, pucker, and   brush off all the dead skin for smooth, soft lips.
6. Sleep with lip balm on for soft lips in the morning.
7. After you put on a dark lipstick, put a finger in your mouth, close your lips around it and gently pull your finger out. The excess lipstick will come out on your finger instead of staining your   teeth.
8. Never press your lips together to transfer lipstick. Your bottom and top lip are not the same shape. Use the lipstick or a lip brush to fill color in.

Eyes

9. Use an under-eye cream to keep the area moisturized. The skin here is very delicate, so use your ring finger to apply product.
10. Concealer is a life saver. Almost all of us have dark circles or shadows under our eyes, applying concealer there will make you look fresher instantly. I love MAC NC 42. Follow it up with a pressed powder to keep it in place.
11. Always curl your lashes with an eyelash curler before you put mascara on. Mascaras work best when put on curled eyelashes to give you that wide-eyed look.
12. Waterproof mascara is your best friend. It keeps your lashes up for a longer time, and you don’t have to worry about getting emotional or getting caught in rain.

Face

13. Wear sunscreen. Every. Single. Damn. Day.
14. Exfoliate once or twice a week with a gentle scrub or with used coffee grounds.
15. Drink honey lemon water every morning to flush toxins out and keep skin glowing.
16. Drink a lot of water every day. Your skin needs moisture and a good water intake will help keep it looking plump and healthy.
17. Before applying blusher, smile. It will make your cheeks pop. Sweep the blusher from your cheeks to temples. Also, it’s just nice to smile at yourself.

Hair

18. Use a conditioner after shampoo. It surprises me how so many women still don’t do this.
19. If you’re using heat on your hair through straightening/ curling irons, remember to protect your hair with a heat spray before you apply heat.
20. The easiest and most effective way to get rid of dandruff it is to use baking soda on your scalp. Wet hair, rub baking soda into your scalp, rinse, and then use shampoo and conditioner as you normally would.
21. Get your hair trimmed regularly to avoid split ends.
22. Deep condition your hair at least once a week. You can use hot oil or just your hair conditioner on dry hair. Leave it on overnight. Sleep with a shower cap on to not stain your pillow.
23. Try and wash your hair twice or once a week to let the natural oils build up. You may think you’re getting rid of greasiness by shampooing your hair frequently, but it works the other way round as your scalp produces more oil as you strip away moisture with frequent washes.

If you're too busy to put on a full face of make up, I recommend using just concealer. This one product will make you look fresher instantly. Mascara and lipstick follow close behind. A concealer that matches your complexion and hides tiredness, mascara that opens up your eyes, and a lippie in a color that looks great on you will have you looking gorgeous, fresh, and feeling confident. And it takes less than 5 minutes, I promise.

What beauty tips and tricks have you learned that is invaluable to your routine? What would you add to my list? Let me know in the comments below!

My minimalist make up routine

My minimalist make up routine

My make up routine has drastically changed in the last year or so. By change I mean that it's become much shorter with fewer products. For instance, I've stopped wearing foundation and eyeliner altogether. Eyeliner because I think my eyes are already defined and I like enhancing them with mascara instead. I feel like eyeliner tends to make me look older and too made up.

I stopped wearing foundation because I have good skin and I don't like covering it up. I want to let it breathe. Plus foundation feels too heavy in this heat and rubs off everywhere. It's just a hassle I can do without. I've given up on eyeshadow too, for the same reason. I like minimalism!

Make up for me serves two purposes: to make me look fresher and enhance my features, which I completely achieve from my current routine. And here's how I do it, starting from scratch.

Me without make up:

What I use:

The result:

How I do it:
Step 1. After I've moisturized and put sunscreen on, I start with concealer to cover the shadows under my eyes. I use Inglot's cream concealer, MW 101. I dab it on with my ring finger.
Step 2. I curl my eyelashes with Shu Uemura's Eyelash Curler.
Step 3. I add lots of mascara- 3 coats to be exact, and I like my mascara waterproof. My current fave is Maybelline's Colossal Volum' Express. Maybelline waterproof mascaras don't kid around. I've bloody showered with this thing on and it didn't run.
Step 4. A quick sweep of bronzer, just under my cheekbones. I use Bourjois Delice de Soleil in 12.
Step 5. I apply blush on the apples of my cheeks. I've been using Clarins Coral Sunset for some time now. It stays put even though my skin's oily.
Step 6. I fill in my lips with any one of these Clarins lip liners: 05 Azalea or 02 Ruby. {I wear lipliner all over my lips as my upper lip is darker than my lower lip so it makes for a good neutral base to put lipstick on.}
Step 7. Lipstick. I'm obsessed with rich burgundy, red and deep pinks. They suit my skin tone, add a certain elegance and really define my lips.

So all I'm using are a few quality products to enhance what I feel are my best features: eyes, lips and cheekbones.

There you have it. Minimalist make up.
Try it!
