How to Accessorize with Necklaces- Part I

I've had a few readers asking me to do a post on how to accessorize. And since accessories cover everything from earrings to bangles to necklaces to belts to purses, I thought I'd start with necklaces. (I've already done a tutorial on belts, see it here.)

I have an ever-growing collection of necklaces to which I keep adding. And the best part is, buying necklaces isn't hard on the wallet. I usually get mine from H&M and Forever21.
You don't need to have a collection as big as mine. You need a few basic necklaces differing in length and chunkiness.
For instance, the really small delicate one on a short chain. My favourite is this tiny flower one from F21:

And the rest (and I've used only these for the tutorial):

The kind of necklace you choose depends on the dress/ top you're wearing. I'm of the school of thought that if you're wearing a necklace, earrings should be small otherwise it looks too busy. I'm wearing the same small earrings in all the pictures.

I always work with the idea of filling up the blank spaces on your upper-half with a necklace. Keeping that in mind I'm going to show you what I'd wear with different tops of varying necklines.

The Deep V
You're exposing a lot of chest in a top with a deep V-neck. Wear a beaded necklace that falls in the horizontal centre of your chest. A necklace with a medium-sized pendant would also work with this, but just remember that it shouldn't be too high up your neck or so low that it touches the tops' neckline.

The Collared Button-down.
I love wearing a collar necklace on top of a button-down. You can button-up the collar completely or leave the top button undone. You can even wear three or four different beaded necklaces of subsequent lengths, but keep them close to the collar.

Or you can play it safe and wear the delicate necklace. Hint: Undo another button.

The Long Plain Top

This top is like a blank canvas on your torso. I like to wear my longest chain with this. And such a top accommodates the chain's length. (Don't wear a necklace that's much more longer than the top.) You can even wear more than one, but I'll show you how in the second part! A long necklace with a big statement pendant also looks great with this. (And I just realized I don't have one. Time to go necklace shopping!)

A few more tips:
  • You don't need to match the colour of the necklace to anything you're wearing.
  • It doesn't matter if you're top-half heavy and the necklace tends to fall in between your breasts, it still looks good.
  • You can wear long chains even if you've got a chunky belt on. It won't look too busy.
I hope this was helpful! Part II coming soon!
