Adulting 101: Four Things You Need to Know When Getting into the Real World

Adulting is a word used to describe the act of behaving like a responsible adult. If you’re ready to put this term into practice but don’t know where to start, you’ve found the right article!

While there are many ways you can increase your responsibility and begin to do things as other adults do, I'm sharing four major tips to help you master adulting when you enter the real world:

Career

If you’re looking for tips on adulting, then you’re most likely just starting out in the job field. Whether you chose to go to college or not, getting started on your career requires hard work to get your foot in the door. Putting together a solid resume, practicing your interview skills, and learning how to negotiate can be helpful when you’re ready to start interviewing.

It’s also important to network and use social media platforms such as LinkedIn to connect with individuals in your field of work. Simple ways to network include asking creative questions, preparing an elevator pitch, and listening more than you speak. Doing this will help at any point in your career and build solid connections with other people in your field.

Finances

Getting your finances in order is a crucial step when it comes to adulting. Having control of your money, learning how to save, and even investing can lead you to a path of financial stability. If you don’t already have an organized financial system, consider opening a checking and savings account to allow your paychecks to be directly deposited. And have a designated spot for putting money away. Even having a credit card to build up your credit score can be beneficial down the road in acquiring a mortgage or loan if necessary.

In terms of investing, it can be tricky to get started but doing your research can be incredibly helpful in providing you with passive income. There are plenty of tools online that can help you get started and track your investments throughout the process. Investing apps are a great way to get started. A capital gains tax calculator can help you track taxes on your investment revenue over time.

Home Responsibilities

When the time comes for you to get your own home—whether renting or buying—many responsibilities come with it. For example, regular maintenance is required to make sure your home is safe for you to live in. Knowing how to perform small tasks such as unclogging a drain, cleaning major appliances, or even patching up small holes is helpful.

Keep in mind that you’ll also have to undertake household chores to maintain a clean and safe environment. Typical tasks such as laundry, dishes, and vacuuming regularly need to be done to maintain your living space. If you're a clotheshorse like me, pay attention to laundry. You don't want your perfect work outfits or that gorgeous pair of nautical pants you love so much, ruined by your own hands because you didn't follow washing instructions.

Health and Wellness

Maintaining your health and overall wellness is incredibly important to leading a happy and healthy life. Taking the time to schedule annual doctor and dentist appointments can help keep your health in check, and work as a preventative measure.

Be sure to listen to your body when it tells you something because that usually means something’s wrong. Think about looking into your employer’s benefits packages and insurance plan offerings. This’ll help ease the financial stress that comes with medical situations.

Being an adult means taking care of your body, and to do so requires healthy eating and exercise. In terms of exercise, you don’t have to sign up for a gym membership if you’re looking to cut back on expenses. You can go for a walk outside or join a sports club to get the recommended thirty minutes of exercise each day. In terms of a well-balanced diet, make a conscious effort to eat fruits, vegetables, protein, and healthy carbs each day. Even having daily vitamins can help improve your overall wellness.

No matter where you are in your adulting journey, keeping these few tips in mind can help improve your experience. Whether you’re beginning your career, just moving out, or something in between, adulting can be a fun and unique experience if you allow it to be.
