We all have those days when we don’t want to do anything. I mean, you don’t even want to
get out of bed. Working from home I face the same problem. Some days, either
because I've worked out too much the day before and I'm physically exhausted, or I’m mulling over some
emotional problem in my head, I just don’t feel like doing anything. Everyone has these days. Especially now, since all the festivities are over and it's cold out and you feel lethargic. Amiright?
But there
are emails to be answered, phone calls to be made, work to be done. And you’ll feel lousy if you don’t do them. So here are a few things I
do to get moving and motivated:
1. Do something you like, first
When you don’t feel like doing
anything, start a task that you like doing. That could be anything from
finishing up a fun work project or doing something that’s a hobby. This will put you in a better mood and a more positive frame of mind. And since a task is
a task, finishing it will make you feel productive, and spur you on to do the next
thing.
2. Create a nice atmosphere
Light a candle, use your favourite pen or
stationery, play some music. Anything that puts you in a better mood and makes
you want to sit at your desk and work.
Now I’m not saying wolf down a bag of
chips, I’m saying get a cup of coffee, or your favorite tea in your favorite
mug. Or a few pieces of chocolate. The food/ drink will give you energy and
make you feel like working.
4. Start slow
When you really don’t feel like working,
start slow. For example, if I have to write an article, I’ll start it, but not
rush to finish it. I give myself the freedom to work on the task at hand in my
own time and at my own pace. Obviously, if you have a boss bearing down on your
neck to finish something urgently, this may not be possible, but maybe you can
explain to him/ her that you need a little more time to finish the task so as
to be able to show good quality work.
5. Get away from facebook
Facebook and Instagram can be so tempting
when you don’t feel like doing anything. Give yourself 5 or 10 minutes to check
your social media and then close the windows and put your phone notifications
on silent so you’re not tempted to be distracted.
6. Take the day off
And when you really, really, REALLY don’t
feel like doing anything, take a personal day. Promise yourself that you’ll
work twice as hard the next day.
7. Don’t push yourself
The worst thing you can do when you’re
feeling demotivated is to push yourself too much. You’ll only end up doing bad
work and get into a worse mood than you’re in. Be gentle and loving with
yourself, and know that everyone has days like these.
