My Super {Really Effing Weird} Skincare Stuff

My Super {Really Effing Weird} Skincare Stuff

I share a selfie of my makeup face almost every day on my Instagram stories. And in reply to them, I get a lot of messages asking me what foundation I use and telling me that my skin looks great. As I mentioned in this post showing my makeup routine in detail, I don't wear any foundation. I don't like it and I have good skin.

I take very good care of my outsides and my insides, which results in gorgeous skin. It's something we all forget. Keep your insides clean and healthy, drink a lot of water, have a positive attitude and your skin will show it! In addition to that, of course, is my skincare routine. Of late I have added a few products to it that made me go HOLY #$!@ after I used them. They make my skin look and feel super amazing, and super clean. Something you always want for your skin- to be CLEAN. So here are those superstar products that I've been using, what's in them and why they're so good for you.

Before I begin, let me just say that this not a sponsored post, I have not been paid to promote these items. I'm merely sharing my experiences of having used them.

The Luxury Stuff

Okay, I must tell you that this stuff is an investment. But it's so worth it. I discovered it on my recent trip to Italy and after the skin care specialist Natalia applied these products to my face, I felt the results. Which is why I had to have them.

This gel is super weird but super amazing. It apparently contains bee venom {!} and that's apparently really good for your skin. Using the little spatula, you apply a thin layer of it to a clean face, avoiding the eye area. You have to let it dry and wash it off with water or wipe it off with a warm wet towel.

When you wash it off, you'll feel all the dead skin and deep-seated dirt rolling off of your face, sort of like when you use an eraser on pencil marks and it comes off in these little black bits. Naaasty. But so good for you!

Because once you've got it all off, believe me, you're gonna be wondering how the heck were you living with such a dirty face and how incredibly amazing, incredibly clean and incredibly smooth your skin feels now. You need to do this only once a week as your skin renews in 7 days. Because your skin is so clean now, whatever moisturizer or skincare products you're currently using will get absorbed much better and be more effective. Sounds good, right?

This is again a once-a-week mask. It contains collagen and elastin from plant stem cells. This collagen helps to reduce fine lines, and even deep wrinkles, as claimed by them. The mask comes with a Certificate of Authenticity, claiming that they use all-natural and all-organic ingredients. It's something else when your cream comes with a certificate!

They say that you'll see a difference with each application, and I certainly do. I like to apply this collagen mask right after I clean my face with the Queen Bee Peeling Gel so that this mask can get absorbed and work all its plant stem cell goodness deep into my skin. When you put the mask on, you feel a tingling sensation in certain areas. I've noticed that I feel the tingling sensation where I have dry skin like around my mouth.

You have to leave it on for 20 minutes and wash it off with warm water. After you've washed it off, you're going to see a big difference in your skin. After I used it for the first time in my hotel room in Rome, my fine lines looked like they had smoothened out. I couldn't believe it! My face looked super-smooth and youthful like I had aged 5 years backwards! My skin felt tighter and firmer right after and even the whole of next day. I looked and FELT amazing, knowing my face looked so smooth and was glowing!

Both these lotions are definitely an investment. I was lucky and managed to get them much cheaper because Natalia took a liking to me and gave me her staff discount plus a damaged box, bringing the price way lower than what it is.

And Now, The REALLY Cheap Stuff

When I was in Kerala in January with my brother, my mother had asked us to get her some Ayurvedic meds. After looking for an Ayurvedic medicine shop for ages, we finally found one on the outskirts of town. It was run by a sweet old lady who barely spoke English. After we finished buying all the medicines my mother wanted, the lady asked me to buy this cream. When I saw that it said 'fairness cream' on it, I refused, but she insisted that it was really good for removing black marks from your face. And to apply it only at night before sleeping.

The cream turned out to be AMAZING. Kumkumadi Lepam is an Ayurvedic cream containing the very best natural stuff you can apply to your face. It has turmeric, saffron and sandalwood {it smells INCREDIBLE} and other natural ingredients like liquorice and blue lotus. When I saw that the cream contains saffron and sandalwood, I knew it would be amazing as these two ingredients are great for the skin {but are so expensive that you wouldn't buy them and apply them separately}.

I started using it immediately, and it worked like a charm. My skin was clearer, blemishes disappeared really fast and I had much lesser acne. Here's the kicker-  it's effing cheap. It's only for RS 70, which is 400 Bahraini fils or $1. It's a small tube, but still. It does last you a while. So if you know someone who's going to India, ask them to bring it for you. Or order it online.

If you can't afford the luxury items, I'd highly recommend trying Kumkumadi out and seeing the difference. Although I love the thought that this Ayurvedic cream could be working better because of using the Queen Bee Peeling Gel, and leaving all the goodness of saffron, turmeric and sandalwood in my skin. From the luxury items, if you can afford to get the peeling gel, get it. It's so important to deep cleanse your skin. And it's the cheaper of the two, so get it as a treat for yourself!

As for the rest of my skincare routine, I use an eye cream, a normal moisturizer and SUNSCREEN every single day. I take my makeup off using a waterproof makeup remover or micellar water, and then wash my face using a face wash. I'm not mentioning the names and brands of these items here as I don't stick to any specific brand. I try out different ones all the time.

I talk about how having great skin and hair can make you look super-stylish, in my book, Loving Yourself In Style. There's also an entire chapter on health and fitness, so you know how to make your skin look good from inside out!

So that's my secret to great skin. Let me know what you think in the comments below!

How To Do My Everyday Makeup- A Step-by-step Guide

How To Do My Everyday Makeup- A Step-by-step Guide

Many of you have asked me how I'm doing my makeup, especially my eyeliner. So I thought I'd do a full makeup tutorial showing the products I'm using, with a step-by-step guide to how I do my make up. Before I begin, let me start by saying that I like to keep my makeup as simple as possible. I'm not into heavy eyebrows or lots of blended eye shadow. And I like my beauty sleep! Which is why you're seeing very few products in the picture above. I like my makeup routine to take the least amount of time possible but result in a look that's defined, without looking over the top.

Also, I don't wear foundation. I have good skin, and I like to let it show. I find foundation too heavy for my oily skin. I hate the way it makes you look older and defines your lines and wrinkles. Plus, in Bahrain's heat and humidity, it just feels too heavy on the skin. This is just my personal opinion. If you like foundation, go ahead and wear it. Just add it to this makeup routine.

The products in the image above are placed in the order of use, from left to right.

Let's begin.

A step-by-step guide to my basic/ everyday makeup

Step 1: Primer
After I've moisturized and put on sunscreen on my face {if you want to know which sunscreen I use and why it's essential for every day, read this post}, I start my makeup routine by applying Clarins Instant Smooth Perfecting Touch as a primer. I apply it underneath my eyes, in the corners, to the area next to my nose that has open pores, as well as on my nose. I love how it smoothens the skin and makes it ready for concealer.

Step 2: Corrector
After the primer, I apply an orange corrector underneath my eyes. I have dark shadows underneath my eyes, as well as some darkness in the inner corners. Before I put on concealer, the orange corrector helps to even out the darkness and take away the purpleness of the shadows. I use L.A Girl Pro Conceal Corrector in orange.

The trick here is to use very, very little. Or you'll end up with orange eyes. After getting it wrong many, many times, I have learned to use just a dot under my eyes. I put on a dot under my eyes directly from the corrector tube. I spread this all over the dark undereye area using a soft concealer brush. You can use your fingers as well. Just make sure you don't spread it out on your normal skin. Keep it within the area that's dark because that's where the corrector is needed. You know you've spread and blended it correctly when your undereyes look as if they're the same colour as the rest of your face, not orange.

Step 3: Concealer + Powder
After the corrector, I put on concealer over the corrector. I use L.A Girl Pro Concealer in Pure Beige. Using the tube directly, I apply it in downward strokes, making a triangle under my eye, next to the nose. I blend it out using a concealer brush. It's not important whether you use dots or strokes or whatever shape to put concealer on, just make sure you don't keep it only within the area of your undereye. Extend it downwards to the top of your cheek area next to your nose, so it looks well-blended.

I also apply concealer to my eyelids {whatever's left on the brush after I've applied it under my eye as I don't want too much on my eyelid} and to the inside corners of my eyes. Then I apply it to the bulb of my nose where I have open pores and blackheads, and I blend it in using round strokes with the brush, so it really settles in. I use a damp beauty blender to press the concealer in even more. All over my eyelid, under my eyes, the top of my cheeks, and my nose.

I set the concealer by applying two setting powders. On the eye area, I apply Australis Banana Powder. This product is a recent discovery after Mask Line sent it to me. I fell in love with it and it has become a part of my daily makeup routine. The yellowness of the powder really hides and offsets the darkness under my eyes. It lasts the entire day. I've received a lot of compliments since I've started wearing it! On my forehead and chin, I use Ben Nye Neutral Set Colorless Powder as the Banana Powder makes my face look unnaturally white if I apply it on my forehead and chin.

Watch this video to see the concealer technique I use.

Step 4: Eyeliner
My favourite eyeliner at the moment is Schwing, by the Balm cosmetics. It has a fine felt tip, making it easy to apply a defined line. It stays put the entire day, even on my oily skin.

Many of you have asked me how I do my eyeliner. I have round, downturned eyes, so I do my best to turn them up at the ends and to make them look less round. After watching and practising from many, many YouTube makeup videos and makeup posts for round eyes, I settled on this eyeliner technique. This feline flick makes my eyes look lifted up and cat-like. The best part about this eyeliner is that it can be customized. You can adjust the angle, thickness and the length of the liner to suit you and your unique eye shape.

Here's how to do my sexy feline flick:

1. From the centre of your top lash line, draw a straight, almost horizontal, line out to the outer corner of your eye. The line can be angled up high if you want a more dramatic cat-like flick. You can choose to extend it out as far as you want but don't extend it outside your eyebrow. Remember that the higher you lift the line, the thicker your liner will eventually be.

2. Join the end of the line back to the point at the end of your lashline, creating a triangle. Fill this triangle in with your liner.

3. You can now adjust the liner by extending it on the inside to join your lash line, so it looks softer. You can also extend the point of the flick to look more pronounced, or you can lift it up higher for more drama.

And that's it! It's as easy as 1, 2, 3! It does take some time to get it right, so practice, practice, practice! If you have round eyes like mine, don't take the liner all the way into the inner corner or make it thick on the highest arch. Otherwise, the roundness of your eye will look even rounder. The triangular flick at the end is what makes a round eye look cat-like. If you have almond-shaped eyes, you can line your eyes all the way in.

Step 5: Mascara
Once your liner dries {and this liner dries very quickly}, curl your eyelashes using an eyelash curler. I like to lift the curler up and count to 30 to get a good curl. After my lashes are curled, I apply a thin coat of Flormar Ultimate Eyes Primer Mascara along three-quarters of the top of my lashes. This white mascara is a primer that makes my lashes look thicker for when I apply black mascara. Once this is dry, I apply Maybelline Volum' Express The Colossal Waterproof Mascara on top of it. Apply this all the way from the base of the lashes to the top, making sure you cover all the white.

I like to apply several coats. To be honest, I'm not very happy with this mascara. I'm not finding the length and volume I used to. I'm itching to try one of L'Oreal's carbon fibre mascaras. Maybe I'll still use this mascara as the base and apply the carbon fibre mascara on top, as the waterproof-ness holds the lashes up.

Step 6: Eyebrows
I usually do my eyebrows when the mascara is drying. I love the Elf Eyebrow Kit. I use the light brown shade in it and lightly fill in my eyebrows using an angled brush. I already have naturally thick and dark brows and I don't like making them bigger and darker. Which is why this kit and the shades in it are great for a more natural looking brow where I can just fill in my eyebrows with a bit of colour. Once filled in, I apply a brow mascara to keep the hair in place.

Step 7: Highlighting the Eyes
This step can also be done when waiting for the mascara to dry. I take a bright goldish-beige eye shadow and put this in the inner corners of my eyes. This makes my eyes look wide awake and the whole face look brighter.

The last step for my eye makeup- I put a nude beige liner in the lower waterline of my eyes, to make the eyes look more open. I like NYX Wonder Pencil in Medium

And that's it! My eye makeup is done!

Here's the step-by-step guide in pictures for you to pin on Pinterest.

Step 8: Lippie
Once my eye makeup is done, I apply whatever lipstick that suits my fancy Usually, when I wear lipstick I apply lip liner all over my lips so the lipstick stays in place. If I'm wearing a long-stay matte lip colour, I skip the lip liner.

Step 9: Blush
I always apply blush after my lipstick because then I know what colour blush I have to apply. I always choose a shade of blush that's different from my lippie. So if I'm wearing pink lippie, I wear a rosy brownish blush, if I'm wearing maroon lipstick, I put on a pink blush. I do this just so my face doesn't look like it has the same colour all over. I apply it with a soft blush brush, in an upward swooping motion from my cheekbone to my temple.

I haven't taken any pictures of lipsticks and blush. I have so many and depending on what I'm wearing and how I'm feeling that day, I choose the colour for my lips and cheeks. Plus they come in so many different types. I have lipsticks, lip pencils, chubby lip pencils, matte lipsticks, matte liquid lip colours and lip glosses. The same goes for blush. There's powder blushes, cream blushes, cheek stains, ad nauseam. Sometimes I use a bronzer as a blush. Sometimes I mix two colours. So experiment and have fun!

That's it! My makeup is done! This makeup takes about 20- 30 minutes to do. If I remember, I spray my face with a setting spray.

The products listed above are just the ones that I like and choose to use. Feel free to substitute them with whatever brand of product that you like.

A few more tips

During the day when my face gets oily, I use oil wipes to absorb the oil and keep me looking fresh. I also carry a small spray bottle of rose water to spray on my face when my face feels icky and dry. Because my skin tends to flake a bit, even though it's oily, I carry moisturizer with me everywhere. It's in my car, it's in my handbag, it's in my gym bag, it's everywhere!

I hope you found this makeup tutorial helpful. If you have any more questions, or if you want me to do a skincare tutorial, let me know in the comments below!

How To Get Over A Cold In 3 Days (With No Antibiotics)

How To Get Over A Cold In 3 Days (With No Antibiotics)

I was sick with a cold a few days back. It was horrible. I felt weak, my whole body hurt, my nose wouldn't stop running, my throat itched, my left and right ears took turns to hurt, and my nose felt all buzzy as if germs were jumping up and down inside it, having a party. So yeah, it was bad. But after three, yes, only THREE days of feeling like this, my cold was over. I felt fit and fine, and I was back to giving back-to-back classes. And other than the slight sniffles right now, I'm feeling completely fine. And just like you, I was completely astonished at how quickly I recovered.

I can put it all down to the constant herbal remedies I had during those three days. My mother kept making me hot herbal teas and medicines from the kitchen, and I myself kept making and having hot teas and drinks one after another. And since I amazed myself by becoming hale and hearty after this horrible, horrible cold so fast, I wanted to share what I ate and drank so you too can do the same when you get a cold.

Here's a list of what I had. You're going to see a few herbs and spices in almost everything, such as black pepper, ginger and turmeric. These spices are superheroes which is why I put them in everything when I catch a cold. But below you'll see how I took them so you're not having the same one drink again and again and wanting to throw up.

  • Each morning I have a tall mug of hot honey lemon water. When I was sick, to this, I added lots of ground black pepper. It opens up your sinuses when they're blocked, especially when you wake up in the morning when you have a cold and feel so sick as if you're going to die.
  • Turmeric milk: If you don't know what an incredible spice turmeric is, you've been living under a rock. Turmeric is an antiseptic and antibiotic spice that kills infection and makes your immune system stronger. Turmeric milk is gaining popularity so much nowadays that Starbucks has started a Turmeric Latte. Screw you, Starbucks. I've been drinking 'turmeric lattes' since I was born. Here's how to make it:
    • 1 cup milk/ coconut milk/ almond milk
    • 1 tsp turmeric powder
    • Heat milk on low on the stove. Add the turmeric. Stir. Take off the stove. Add 1 tsp of ginger powder and a few sprinkles of black pepper.
    • P.S: Turmeric milk is frikkin' amazing. Have it every day. Make it for your family daily and force it down their throats.
  • My Extremely Potent Herbal Cold Killer Drink: This drink is so amazing that I dedicated an entire blog post to this. Click HERE to read the post and to know how to make it.
  • Home-made popcorn: Popcorn makes a sore throat feel SO much better. It's low in calories so you can have lots. And it's good for you. Buy a popcorn machine so you can make healthy popcorn at home. Add extra virgin olive oil and salt. I always make and have lots of popcorn when I'm sick and I'm too weak to do nothing but lie in bed watching Netflix or reading.

  • Soup: With every meal, I was having home-made vegetable soup or mutton soup. You can make your own veg/ chicken/ mutton soup, just add lots of black pepper and onion.
  • Boiled egg: Eggs are full of goodness and good protein that keeps you full for longer. When you have a cold you don't feel like eating anything so boiled eggs are great. And yes, put lots of black pepper on them.
  • Mung Dal Khichdi: This is a typical Indian rice and lentils dish that is easy to eat when you're feeling super sick and even have a fever. It's filled with herbs, spices and has lots of excellent nutrition. It's soft and tasty, and when eaten hot, it feels blissful on a painful, sore throat. How to make:
    • 3/4th cup {any} rice, 1/4th cup split green lentils {mung}. Wash and soak at least for an hour in water.
    • Add 3 cups of water. Cook uncovered on high heat. Add 1/4th tsp turmeric, and salt to taste. After it boils, cover and reduce heat and cook for 12-15 minutes. The consistency should be soft and creamy like a risotto.
    • In another saucepan/ frying pan, heat 1 tsp ghee, add a pinch of cumin seeds, 2 cloves chopped garlic, and a handful of curry leaves. Add to the rice and lentils mix. Enjoy with soup.
When you're sick with a nasty cold, you just want to feel good. Which is why you should be having comfort food like khichdi and popcorn which soothes you. You can have all the above even when you don't have a cold. None of it has any side effects but is great for your health and immune system.

As a result of all the herbs and spices generating heat in my throat and sinuses, my nose was constantly flowing. This is a good thing as you don't want phlegm to be blocked in your chest, throat and even in your face, giving you that horrible sinus headache and facial pain. And then you have to blow your nose when all the icky phlegm accumulates. Eww. Better to have a runny nose and let all of it flow out. As Hagrid wisely said, "Better out than in".

In addition to the above, I ate extremely healthy food during mealtimes and as snacks. Being a fitness freak instructor, I eat clean and healthy all the time, but I monitored what I was putting into my body even more during these three days as I wanted to recover quickly. So lots of fresh fruit and veg, and home-made smoothies and juices.

Here are a few more things you can do to recover quickly from a cold:
  • Avoid sugar.
  • Avoid eating food from outside.
  • Rest up. All 3 days I didn't do classes, and I worked from my bed. As much as I could, anyway.
As a result of my barrage of herbal remedies and clean eating, not only was I able to be up and running in three days but also none of my family members caught my cold, which usually happens. I hope this helps if you or a family member have a cold or want to avoid one.

Until next time,

xoxo and happy new year!

Blue Floral Pants and Building a Wardrobe Of Comfortable Style

Blue Floral Pants and Building a Wardrobe Of Comfortable Style

Floral pants. I could stock my entire wardrobe with them. I have long legs so printed pants look good on me, and I try to get them whenever I can. And of course, floral is my favorite kind of print. Flowers splashed all over a drab item like trousers make them look feminine and cheerful, and add an exuberant touch to your work wardrobe. These pants from Oasis are a thick polyester mix, with a tapered leg, and they have my two favorite features- an elasticated waist at the back and pockets. {Which girl doesn't love pockets?!} The elasticated waist and tapered leg mean that they're very comfortable to move around in, while subtle pleats near in the front give them a formal look. I love the boldness of the floral print and the fact that it's in different shades of blue as it's a great neutral color that goes with most other colors.

I picked out the red in the pants and matched this red top from Koton with it. I'm finding that this top is soon becoming my favorite because one, it's the perfect shade of red, and two, it looks so elegant because of the lace accents. I used to have a red top similar to this one and after wearing it a zillion times I gave it away. Ever since I've been looking for the same kind of top again and I found this one which is not only the exact same cut and color, but has lace. Woohoo! The lace accents give it a beautiful luxurious feel even though the cut is simple. The material is a soft cotton mix making it feel cool and light on the skin. I finished with metallic blue pumps and a few accessories of crystal tear drop earrings and a statement watch. This is a great outfit to run around doing meetings in, as it's cool and comfy. You can throw on a blazer or a smart jacket if you're sitting in a freezing office.

My good friend Nada's last blog post on wearing what you're comfortable in inspired me to write my next bit in this post. In her post Nada talks about having 'meh' days and just wanting to wear what you're comfortable on in those days. And it got me thinking about my wardrobe, and I realized I don't have anything that I'm not uncomfortable in! Yup! ALL my clothes are super duper comfy! If you've been following my posts for a while, {and reading what I write instead of just looking at the pictures, haha}, you'll notice that almost always I describe my clothes as a linen mix/ cotton mix, cool, comfy and easy to move around in. That's because I believe very strongly that first and foremost, your clothes should be comfortable. There's no need to sacrifice comfort for style. Once you know your style and what you like, look for the most comfortable variation/ cut/ material of those clothing items. Buy clothes according to your lifestyle {which means where you work, what your day involves, whether or not you have babies or young children to tend to which may mean having to wash your clothes frequently or having to get dressed in a hurry every morning, and other factors like that}, as well as the weather of the place you live in {no point in buying heavy and expensive winter wear if you live in Bahrain!}.

Same goes for shoes. If you like high heels, get them in your size or a size bigger so they don't hurt your feet. Some of my high heels are more comfortable than flats! If you prefer flats, make sure they don't rub against the corners of your feet and cause pain. There are many types of socks available which you can wear to protect your feet from painful friction in any kind of shoes. Yes I know that WHY CAN'T SHOE MAKERS JUST MAKE COMPLETELY COMFORTABLE SHOES but... c'est la vie. You can buy socks that cover the bottom and sides of your feet so they can't be seen, but they'll stop those painful angry red marks on the corners of your feet from rubbing against the shoe. I use these liner socks from New Look. They're cheap and they do the job nicely. I wear them with both flats and heels. And lastly, the same goes for accessories. Don't buy costume jewelry if it makes your skin itch. Or heavy jewelry when you know you'll get tired of wearing it all day. Buy bags and sunglasses that complement your lifestyle and your style.

There's always an area where your style and comfort intersect and that's the area you want to build a house on and live in forever. The MAIN reason you're going to do this, is because you'll be in a good mood when your clothes aren't causing you discomfort. Life is too short to be wearing uncomfortable things!

Once you have determined what kind of clothes, shoes and accessories go perfectly with your style AND are comfortable, fill up your wardrobe with them! And yes, that also means getting rid of anything and everything that feels horrible! Get rid of those too-tight shoes, that itchy dress, and that jacket that pulls across your back. Imagine having a closet full of things that are not only your style, but also super comfy and pleasant to wear. Each item should feel so good you wanna wear it all day, every day. So even on those days when you're not in the mood to get dressed and just want to wear what you're most comfortable in, you'll still end up looking great!
