Classic Books I Love

I was watching Charlie and The Chocolate Factory the other night with a friend . He told me that he had watched Willy Wonka and The Chocolate Factory, but not this version with Johnny Depp. I asked him if he had read the book. He said no. I was appalled. Really?! Roald Dahl? Charlie and The Chocolate Factory? You haven't read it? I've read both the parts! (Yes, there's a second part. Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator). I understand if teenagers and kids nowadays don't know these books, but us 90s generation have read and know these books for crying out loud! So anyway I thought I'd tell you about four classics I love.

Charlie and The Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl

If you haven't watched any of the movies, the story features the adventures of young Charlie Bucket inside the chocolate factory of eccentric chocolatier Willy Wonka. Warning: You cannot read this book without heaps of chocolate and candy around.

“You should never, never doubt something that no one is sure of.”

Mr. Wonka: "Don’t forget what happened to the man who suddenly got everything he wanted."
Charlie Bucket: "What happened?"
Mr. Wonka: "He lived happily ever after.”

Alice's Adventures in Wonderland
The name usually shortened to Alice in Wonderland, this is a story of a young girl's adventures after she falls down a rabbit hole. (If you didn't already know that, the world says hi to you from outside your cave.) This has got to be one of the funniest children's books. I luuuurve this book! The fantasy! The nonsense and utter madness! The poems and songs and the crazy characters- the Mad Hatter, the Queen of Hearts, the Cheshire Cat, the Caterpillar. Oh and there's a second book too- Through the Looking-Glass and What Alice Found There. (I've read this too, it's as good or even better than the first.)

“You used to be much more..."muchier." You've lost your muchness.”

“I don't think..." then you shouldn't talk, said the Hatter.”

"But I don't want to go among mad people," Alice remarked. "Oh, you can't help that," said the Cat: "We're all mad here. I'm mad. You're mad."

Little Women
{Yeeeeeees, this is the same book Rachel in F.R.I.E.N.D.S makes Joey read.} Based in the 19th century, the story follows the lives of four sisters: Meg, Jo, Beth and Amy March and how they grow from 'little' women to mature ladies seeking out their own path in life. It's a tale of relationships, careers, family and true love. You'll fall in love with and relate to every character. Sibling rivalry, deep friendships, flirtations, jealousy, grief, romance. It's all captured in this one tiny novel.

"I'll try and be what he loves to call me, 'a little woman,' and not be rough and wild; but do my duty here instead of wanting to be somewhere else."

"Money is a needful and precious thing,--and, when well used, a noble thing,--but I never want you to think it is the first or only prize to strive for. I'd rather see you poor men's wives, if you were happy, beloved, contented, than queens on thrones, without self-respect and peace."

"The best of us have a spice of perversity in us, especially when we are young and in love."

The Alchemist

I must have read this book over fifteen times! This is the story of Santiago the shepherd boy towards his treasure. This book is an epitome about following your heart and chasing your dreams. It's written in the simplest language but you have to read a sentence over and over just to let the meaning sink in. Every time I read it, a different part of it resonates with whatever I'm going through. If you haven't read this yet, go and buy a copy of it NOW. You'll want to kiss me later, trust me.

“There is only one thing that makes a dream impossible to achieve: the fear of failure.”

“Everyone seems to have a clear idea of how other people should lead their lives, but none about his or her own.”

“There is only one way to learn. It's through action. Everything you need to know you have learned through your journey.”

While writing this post I realized I don't have the first three books with me anymore. So I'm ordering them. I'm going to spend the summer reading old children's classics. {Nerd alert!}

Happy Wednesday! xxx

P.S: I was editing posts last night and somehow one from almost a year back got published as a new one. Which is why you can see me with a different hairstyle in the post older to this one. I don't know how to fix it or even if it can be fixed!
