What I Do To Keep Fit

I get asked about how I keep fit. A lot. I haven't done a post on it until now because the answer to that question is terribly obvious and not one that people usually like to hear-

I eat healthy and I exercise.

Trust me, there is no shortcut to getting fit. You have to do it the hard way for the best results. I'm one of those really annoying people who loves exercise because of the endorphin rush you feel after. Also, I like keeping my body in shape because clothes look better on a fit body.

I've been exercising since I was 13. At that time I didn't have the internet. So I would cut out all the exercise pages from women's {AND men's} magazines and keep them all in a folder. Every day I'd take the folder out, leaf through the pages, choose a set of different exercises, and do them. I started lifting weights when I was 16. I would have done it sooner but I had heard that weight training stunts your height if you do it before you the age of 16. Whether that's true or not, I didn't want to take the risk. I like being tall. So, my combination of exercise at that time was walking, lifting weights and yoga.

I've continued the same basic exercises- cardio, weights and yoga- throughout my life except now I've stopped doing weights because the yoga I do now is good strength training and gives me the definition I want. And of course, being a BODYCOMBAT™ instructor I do a lot of it so that nicely fills up my quota of cardio. I usually work out for an hour 4-5 times a week, sometimes more.

That's what I do for exercise.

Part II is about eating right. There is nothing new I'm going to say here that you haven't already heard from every fit person and health institution so don't be surprised.

I hardly eat processed and packaged food. I haven't eaten a donut, burger, pizza or drank a fizzy drink in years. I don't miss these foods. I don't even like them. I don't smoke. I don't drink. I don't do substance abuse of any kind. I'm gluten and lactose intolerant so I don't eat bread and don't drink milk, or wheat and dairy products. I don't drink tea or coffee. Occasionally I'll treat myself to a piece of cake or a scoop of ice cream, but that's maybe once a week or less. If it's chocolate, it has to be dark.

I try to eat as much fresh food as possible. Lots of fruits and vegetables and lean meat. I have a crazy high metabolism so I eat 6-7 times a day and snack on nuts and dried fruits. At work I sip on herbal teas all day.
I try to get at least 6 hours of sleep at night and I meditate. You can't be fit without resting your mind.

So that's how I keep fit. A lot of people tend to tell me I'm not enjoying life, I should be eating whatever I want, life's too short and I'm still young, blah blah blah. But you know what, I think that keeping myself healthy and fit makes me get more from life. I can eat a piece of rich dessert without feeling guilty. I can climb 4 flights of stairs without becoming breathless. I can wear tight jeans without ever being worried about a muffin top. My body is the only home I have my entire life and I want it to serve me well. Life's too short to not be fit!
