18 More Tips To Lose Weight Faster

18 More Tips To Lose Weight Faster

Photo: Arif Feroze
Two years back I had posted 23 Tips On How To Lose Weight Faster. Unfortunately, I haven't posted much on health and fitness recently, so here are some more tips that will help you get rid of that irritating excess flab.
  1. Drink a lot of water before going to the supermarket. Literally, fill your stomach with water. You won't feel like buying candy bars/ chips and other junk when you're shopping.
  2. Replace sugar with jaggery and date syrup in your tea, coffee and desserts.
  3. Do a fitness class instead of on the gym floor. You'll  push yourself more during the class and you'll be more motivated to attend regularly.
  4. Reward a fitness milestone with anything but food. Earrings, lipstick, a new dress, flowers. Not cake.
  5. Take all the high energy, processed junk food from your house to your office or workplace. Keep it in the pantry there. You can't eat bad food if it's not there. {And don't eat it in the office!}
  6. When choosing ice cream go for the kiddie scoop.
  7. Increase lean protein in your meals. Lean protein means any meat like chicken, turkey, beef, mutton, which has the skin and fat stripped away from it.
  8. Have one cheat item every week if you really crave it, so you don't binge later.
  9. Go from white to brown - replace white sugar, white rice and white bread with brown sugar, brown rice and brown bread.
  10. Eat protein with every single meal and snack. Some examples of protein: unsalted nuts, trans fat-less peanut butter, lean meats, plain yoghurt, fish, eggs, beans.
  11. Switch to dark chocolate - anything that has over 50% chocolate content.
  12. Read labels to look out for hidden sugars. Glucose, fructose, dextrose, aspartame, maltitol, sorbitol are all sugar.
  13. Avoid the low-fat, 'diet' foods. These foods usually have extra sugar or fat to make up for the taste.
  14. When in doubt, go for the full fat, rich dessert. Enjoy it and burn twice as many calories the next day in your workout. It's better than eating something low fat but calorie-laden and thinking you got off scot-free.
  15. Choose HIIT. HIIT stands for High-Intensity Interval Training. It has been proven to be more effective at burning calories and fat. BodyCombat, one of the programs I teach, is HIIT.
  16. If it feels heavy on the tongue, it's probably high in calories and fat.
  17. Drink orange juice every time you feel like eating something sweet.
  18. Replace cream with labneh.
I'm a certified fitness instructor teaching Les Mills BodyCombat and BodyBalance classes in Fitness First, Oasis Centre, Riffa and Revolt Gym, Riyadat Mall. BodyCombat is a high-intensity cardio program in which you kick and punch your way to fitness, and BodyBalance is a mix of Yoga, Tai Chi and Pilates, that leaves you feeling calm, centred, long and strong.

Until next time,

xoxo

9 Things To Do To Stop Feeling Frantic NOW!

9 Things To Do To Stop Feeling Frantic NOW!

We've all had those days. When something goes wrong and needs to be fixed immediately, or when there are just waaaaaay too many demands on your time. Your mind feels like it's racing at full speed and your hands aren't moving fast enough trying to keep up with your head. And that if you stop thinking, even for one second, the world will stop spinning. Sound familiar?

The worst part about feeling frantic like this is that you always tend to do something wrong, which leads you to getting even more nervous which leads to yet more mistakes. It's a vicious circle. Plus all that stress can't be good for your immune system and overall health. So what do you do in such situations when you're going crazy and need to calm yourself down immediately? Here are a few things that I like to do:

Eat dark chocolate
Pure dark chocolate is great for relieving stress. Chocolate reduces cortisol, the stress hormone, and compounds within dark chocolate help to improve your mood. I always have a stash of dark chocolate in my desk drawer and when I'm going nuts, I pop a piece in my mouth and let it melt. Bliss!

Call a friend
Even a 2 minute phone conversation with a good friend will put you in a better mood and take your mind off the chaos. And of course, a really good friend will be able to understand your situation and help you find calm.

Single-tasking
The main problem with feeling frantic is that you try to 3,762 things all at once. And not one of them gets done properly. So stop the multi-tasking and try your best to single-task. Focus all your attention on one task before moving on to the next one. This will help you slow down your racing thoughts and you'll be able to make sense from the chaos.

Listen to music
Put on your favorite music or some slow, calming tunes to put you in a better frame of mind. Take a break and listen to the music for some time, or let the music play in the back as you work.

Breathe in for 4 breathe out for 8
Breathing techniques ALWAYS help to calm down, and the most common advice is 'take deep breaths.' But I love the 'breathe in for 4 breathe out for 8' technique. It's where you inhale through the nose for 4 counts, and exhale through the nose for 8 counts. I find that this helps to calm me down instantly. If you feel like 4 counts is too much, try 2 and 4. To calm down even further, if you have the lung capacity, try inhaling for 8 counts and releasing the breath for 16 counts. Aaahhh. Zen.

Drink herbal tea
Sipping slowly on a hot herbal tea will help you refocus. There are many herbs such as chamomile, mint and ginseng that are known to relieve stress. All these are available in tea forms. If you can't find these, any other herbal tea or even black or green tea will do. It's the act of sipping on a hot beverage that makes you feel calmer. But not coffee! It will make you more jittery!

Declutter
Cleaning and decluttering any horizontal spaces such as tables and consoles will help in relaxing your thoughts. When you're going nuts, stop whatever you're doing, and take 5 minutes to put your papers, files and stationery in order. You'll be able to think clearly again.

Meditate
If you know how to, meditate, even if it is for 5 minutes. Meditation is the best medicine for calming down as it slows down your brain waves, in turn slowing down your thoughts.

Write down your main worries and concerns
Grab a pen and any paper and write down what's bothering you the most or what steps you need to take to solve the problem. Seeing it written down on paper you'll be able to see the problem for what it is, instead of what your frantic mind is making it out to be.

So the next time you're going nuts, try one of these tips, or a combination of a few, or if things are really crazy, all of the above!

If you have any other tricks you use to instantly calm yourself down, I'd love to hear them. Let me know in the comments below.

Until next time,

xoxo

How to look good in this blazing summer

How to look good in this blazing summer

Photo: Arif Feroze

Looking good in summer can be a pain. It's so bloody hot outside, you don't feel like dressing up or putting on a lot of make up. Sweaty arm pits and make up streaking down your face are never a good look. But with a few smart tips, you can still look impeccable in this face-melting heat:

  • Wear clothes in natural materials like cotton, voile and linen. These absorb sweat and let your skin cool off. Avoid polyester and other man-made fabrics that make you sweat.

  • Layer clothes. The problem with Arabia is that we go from blazing sun to blazing air conditioner really quickly. Carry a thin jacket, or wear one with the sleeves pushed up.

  • Skip the foundation. I haven't been wearing it for years and years and I love the no-gunk feeling on my face. If you have to, wear a BB cream or use a concealer on problem areas.

  • Wear waterproof mascara. The humidity won't affect it.

  • Wear sunscreen! The sun can make your skin look terrible, and the effect worsens as the years go on. Protect your skin. I recommend SPF 50 for Bahrain. Check out what I use, here.

  • Carry face blotting sheets. If you have oily skin like me, come summer your face will be super-shiny. Trying to reduce it with compact powder is an exercise in futility, but these thin paper-like sheets make the shine go away. Available in Forever21, Body Shop and Boots.

  • Humidity can make your hair frizzy and limp. Wash your hair daily if you need to and use plenty of conditioner after shampooing. Use leave-in conditioner on semi-dry or dry hair to control the frizz.

  • Spritz on citrussy, light perfumes. It'll make you feel great and thsoe around you feel good too.

  • Don't forget your sunglasses. The skin around your eyes is delicate and it gets tanned and wrinkled easily. Wear shades to protect your eyes. If possible, get sunglasses with Polaroid as these offer great protection.

  •  Drink up! When your body isn't properly hydrated, your skin won't look good. Drink lots and  lots and lots and lots of H2O. Then drink some more.

  • Lastly, stay out of the sun between 12 and 3 pm, and try to eat fruits that are high in water content like watermelon, strawberries, grapefruit and pineapple.

Follow these tips and you'll be looking good on the outside, and feeling cool on the inside!

Until next time,

xoxo
