Fortune favours the brave

Last evening I spent some time talking to a very interesting lady. She was telling me about her life and the challenges she faced. And while talking, she made an interesting point. She said that it takes courage to be courageous.

It's true. It DOES take courage to be courageous. It's only when you're cornered and your back's against the wall, that the warrior in you wakes up. And once it does, Lady Luck becomes your best friend. Everything starts falling into place.

But then again, there are those people who like being cornered. These people are victims of their own lives. They love always being in a tragic situation. They crave and savour the sympathy they get.

Nobody, but nobody, respects victims.
So be brave. And watch how fortune favours you.

Can't think. Brain overloaded.
Yes, I think of the title after I've written this bit.

Little Delights Tuesday

Destiny

  1. A close male friend telling me I'm the strongest woman he knows.
  2. Getting a sparkly purple manicure.
  3. Bitching about someone who deserves to be bitched about.
  4. Watching my kitten hiss at my older brother. And my brother hissing back.
  5. A cathartic conversation with a friend.
  6. A really good tweetup.
  7. Fragrant, sweet, fresh, crispy caramel popcorn.
That's all. I really struggled to get these because I've had a tough week, but I'm happy to know I did have some delightful moments!

Put yours in the comment box. Think hard, you can do it!

Bubbbbllleees!

Top: Playlife, Skirt and Bag: Mango, Belt: ??, Shoes: Payless, Earrings: F21, Bangles: Various,  Watch: Swatch

Fan Yang. May I just say he's HAWT? Heh heh
On Friday evening, I attended the Gazillion Bubble Show. It's basically one man, Fan Yang, doing many tricks using only... wait for it... soap bubbles! He absolutely fascinated me with his bubble artistry, which consisted of him using play of light and colours in bubbles, blowing bubbles within bubbles, spinning bubbles, making a square (yes, really!) bubble, even trapping smoke inside bubbles!

My mouth was open in surprise throughout the show. I was mesmerized. The 5 year old inside me was very, very happy. And very, very jealous of the real 5 year olds who got to go on stage. (And not only because of the caption on the last photo.)

As a finale, he releases more than a gazillion bubbles into the hall. It was such a fantastical, fairy-tale-like sight.( Just look at the photo!).

Things like rainbows and bubbles excite me beyond belief. (You should see me washing clothes. I waste half the time playing and dancing with the foam) Many people around me have asked me, "When will you grow up?". My answer is always :"Who wants to?"

On a style note, I just felt gothic today. I know. Such an opposite to the bubbles.

P.S: This post is dedicated to my niece Emma, who is very upset because of a (very funny) typo she made in an earlier comment. I wish I could have taken her to the Gazillion Bubble Show to cheer her up!

Reasons why I hate the PHONE!

Button-down and Belt: Mango, Jeans: H&M, Shoes: Dorothy Perkins, Earrings: F21, Watch: Swatch
I hate phones. I hate them. All my friends complain that I sound rude and mean on the phone. That all I wanna do is put it down. (One colleague who first spoke to me on the wire then later got to meet me, said I sounded like a fat, old, cranky lady. Ha!)

When I was in school, my best friend Sabs used to call me from her house phone and talk. Me being me I used to always be in a hurry to end the call. Once she got really annoyed and said, "I call you, yet you always want to get off the phone first. What the hell!?"

So, for Sabs, and ALL the people in my life who scratch their heads wondering why I'm so annoying on the wire and so nice in person, here are my justifications:

Justification 1:
I like to focus my complete attention on whatever I'm doing. I want to give my 100% to the task or person in front of me, as cheesy as that sounds. So if it's a friend talking to me, I completely zone out and listen only to him/her. I even forget my surroundings.

Even if I'm in a movie, I get so into it, I tend to forget later who I watched the movie with. There have been many convos where I've started telling a girlfriend about this cool movie I saw, and she's replied, "Idiot, I was sitting next to you."

Justification 2:
Whenever I'm on the phone, I'm SO distracted, I'm usually browsing the net, painting my nails, building a rocket, etc. There are very few people for who (whom?) I'll actually focus my complete attention with on the phone.

Justification 3:
I don't get to see the person. I know you're thinking, "Oh well observed, Captain Obvious", but what I mean is I don't get to see their facial expressions and body language. You can tell so many untruths in a phone convo and get away with them.

Justification 4:
The bloody networks! How annoying is it when the person's voice is muffled/ breaks/ echoes because of the darned network?

Justification 5: (I swear this is the last)
I PAY for it. I pay hard earned money for communicating with you. How ridiculous.
I'd rather pay for a coffee while I have a face to face chat with you in a  nice, quiet atmosphere where I can read your microexpressions and analyse your body language.

So now you know, why my calls are short and sweet.
Ok, not so sweet.

The end.

P.S On a style note, I just went for a simple 70s look today. White button-down, flared jeans, tan belt. Black shoes. Bam! A brunette Farrah Fawcett.

P. P.S: Happy Weekend. Don't call me.

Little Delights Tuesday and Guilty Pleasures

It's Hump Day again. I was literally too tired to take photos, so I decided to show you a sketch instead. You like?

Here are my Little Delights for this week:
  1. A colleague telling me I have stars in my eyes.
  2. Melinda from My Year Of Hugs calling me her little delight of last week. :-)
  3. My 7 year old niece Emma's comments on each post. She lives in Canada, and I have not met her since she was born. (How grateful am I to the internet!) Go read them, they're so cute!
  4. My friend's 7 year old cousin reading out this post in class for a read-aloud project.
This week has been maddening, so I have only these many delights. But over the weekend, a couple of friends and I were sitting at Caribou Coffee, and the napkins had this question on it- List your Guilty Pleasures. We all dared each other to list them. And that made me think- What are my guilty pleasures? (the emphasis being on guilty.) After much thought, here they are:
  1. The dark chocolate fondant at Maya La Chocolaterie. Mmmmmmm...
  2. Throwing a tantrum in front of my mom. I am an expert in throwing tantrums. Being the middle child, I learnt that my tantrums have to be a cut above the rest to really get my mom's attention. And I very unashamedly still throw them. Recently I was throwing one, and my mom looked at me very seriously and asked, "Shabana, how old are you?" My immediate answer- "6. Plus 20."
  3. Reading a gossip magazine at work.
  4. Buying yet one more 5 inch platform heels.
  5. Shopping when I know I shouldn't.
  6. Spending an entire day doing nothing but lazing on the bed. I'm a Type A hyper, workaholic, rush-around person who never switches her brain off. So this is a very guilty pleasure.
  7. Reading just before bed even though it's late and I'm super tired.
Now put yours in the comments. And add your guilty pleasures too, if you dare!

Don't forget to dress your feet!

Clothes and Belt: Mango, Shoes: Dorothy Perkins, Earrings: Accessorize,  Ring: Gold Souk, Bracelet: India, Watch: Swatch
Hmm..so what do we learn from this? Two things: 1. I have huge feet. 2. My kitten is tiny.  (I'm such a genius.)
Today I wanted to go for a dreamy, breezy, romantic but no-nonsense look. So I paired my pencil skirt with this chiffon-ey paisley print top. I adore the bow on this blouse. And of course, the bishop sleeves, my favourite kind. And I completed the look with my double- platform pumps to bring an oomph.

Which made me think, I wonder why so many women forget that their shoes finish the look? I've seen many women wearing outfits put really well together, and then they kill the whole thing by wearing horrible shoes.

I used to work for a lady who used to wear smart, formal clothes to the office daily. I really liked her well-tailored button-downs and formal trousers. She used to match the colours well too. But what would she wear on her feet?
Flip-flops.
I kid you not.
FLIP- FLOPS.
I HATE flip-flops. I wonder why they haven't been banned from production by the fashion police yet? Together with Ugg boots. Which should be renamed Uch boots.

So remember to finish off your look with shoes that go with your outfit. You don't want someone to look at you from head to toe, thinking, "Wow, nice, nice," and when they reach your feet "Arrgghh!".

Knee length boots in Summer? Yes, because I want to.

Top: Playlife, Blazer, Jeans and Earrings: H&M, Boots: Payless, Ring on right hand:  India, left: gifted, Watch: Swatch
It's summer. The temperature is around 40 degrees centigrade. The heat is blistering. Everywhere I look, women are wearing flat Roman sandals. Yet I wanted to wear boots. I wanted to I wanted to I wanted to. So I wore them. (I feel pity on my mom who was subjected to my brand of stubbornness when I was growing up).

I don't care about what people will think. I wanted to wear them, so I did. I actually put my outfit together for the boots. And I'm not giving any justification that I'm indoors anyways and every place is airconditioned, so I don't feel hot in them. (See the sneaky way I actually gave my justification?)

So just do what you want to. Stop overthinking what people will say or how they'll react. The only thing that's important is your own thoughts and happiness. Put. Yourself. First.

P.S: If you're conceited and vain, please ignore the above advice.

Happy Weekend!

Strawberry Milkshake

Top, Belt: Mango, Pants: Zara,  Shoes: New Look, Bangles: Various, Ring: Gold Souk, Earrings: India, Watch: Swatch
Hmm. I probably look like a strawberry milkshake today.
But hey, some days, I just need pinkness. And these pants are just what the doctor ordered.
Ok, that sounded really weird. But whatever.

Little Delights Tuesday

Top: Playlife, Skirt & Belt: Mango, Shoes: Payless, All accessories: Gifted, Watch: Swatch
  1. At the petrol station, a small girl grinning at me from the car next to me.
  2. My extremely boisterous and naughty kitten licking my face.
  3. Passing by 2 guys at my gym and overhearing one of them saying to the other "Man, she's hot." (Haha!)
  4. A girlfriend from college asking me for some style suggestions, and reminding me that I had also given her some style tips when we were in college.
  5. Watching my plants grow.
  6. When my colleague says "Shabana, you're a rocker." whenever I listen to Highway to Hell at work. (He plays in a band himself so this compliment is extra-nice.)
On a style note, I love how the deep jewel tone of this top balances the neutral colour and heavy texture of the skirt. And this has got to be the most versatile belt I own. It goes with everything! I love the tan colour. Now all I need are boots in tan. I know it's summer but I covet boots all. the. time.

Add your little delights in the comments!

Paradigm Shift

Top, Pants: Zara, Belt: Mango, Shoes: Payless, Bangles: Various, Earrings: F21, Watch: Swatch
July's here. Half of the year has gone by. I was just sitting and thinking about all that's happened since the year began, and I'm surprised at the very unexpected 180 degree flip my life has taken.

For starters, I started putting up outfit posts on my blog. Then I moved out of my folks home. At around the same time, my religious views shifted. These three major changes themselves brought on many minor subsequent changes. Not only that, many of my other preconceived notions and mindsets changed.

So all in all, you could say I had a major paradigm shift.

Then I thought- how did all these changes happen? After much contemplating, I realized I just grabbed opportunities that I saw along the way. And the thing is with opportunities, seize one and multiple open up around you. So I just went on a grabbing spree of what made the most sense to me. I did face many, many challenges and lots of negativity, (not to mention lots of small-minded negative people). But I was just really stubborn. And now I truly do feel like I made the right choices. I am truly happy.

On a style note, how much do I love Zara? This top. These pants. Swoon.
